Open Shuhada Street Protest in Hebron - الخليل - مسيرة شارع الشهداء

Open Shuhada Street Protest takes place in Hebron
Source: IMEMC
Friday February 25, 2011
Around 500 Palestinians along with international and Israeli supporters protested, on Friday, in the Old City in Hebron demanding the opening of Shuhada Street. The Israeli military has barred Palestinians from entering the street for over 10 years and only allows Israeli settlers access to it.

As people reached Shuhada Street soldiers attacked and arrested ten persons, including a Palestinian journalist. Tear gas, sound bombs and rubber coated steel bullets were used against those protesting, and also affected residents of the area who were in their homes, resulting in large numbers of both protestors and residents suffering injury from the soldier’s attack.

Tear gas, sound bombs and rubber coated steel bullets were used against protestors. This tactic was used repeatedly to force protestors out of the Old City, located in the H2 district of Hebron, which is under full Israeli military control.

As the assault intensified, a small number of youth threw stones at the advancing military, although many were prevented from doing so by others in attendance.

The protest ended as local youth clashed with Israeli soldiers on the border between the H2 and H1 districts. H1 is under full control of the Palestinian Authority. Witnesses said that the Palestinian security forces stopped the Palestinian youth and did not allow journalists to re-enter the Old City to document events.

This demo was held in protest at Poland'd unhelpful action which will hopefully never be repeated.

Crowds rally against Peres visit to Madrid

PressTV - Crowds rally against Peres visit to Madrid:

Fri Feb 25, 2011 2:52AM
Sonia Labboun, Press TV, Madrid

"Hundreds of Spanish demonstrators gathered in front of the ministry of foreign affairs to protest the visit by Israeli President Shimon Peres. Several human Rights associations, as well as Palestinians living in Madrid also joined the crowd chanting slogans such as “Peres Murderer”, “free Palestine” and “Zapatero accomplice of a criminal”.

Israel is still expanding its territory with new settlements while Palestinians are confined to a small area in their own country surrounded by the Apartheid Wall.
The protesters complain that their government is not voicing their true concerns and that Israel must be held top account for human rights violations.

They are urging the EU to impose sanctions on Israel and boycott Israeli companies and goods. Some also argue that Peres should testify at a court investigating the deadly Israeli attack last May on the Gaza-bound freedom Flotilla.

Despite the protest, however, during a joint meeting, Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero told Peres that Madrid is interested in expanding strategic ties with Israel beyond issues concerning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Protesters here are expressing their support to the Palestinian cause and rejecting a tighter relation with Israelis as long as they keep on ignoring international calls to lift the Gaza siege and stop settlement activities.

According to medical sources, 13 people including 3 children were also injured in tank shelling in eastern Zaitoon neighborhood south of Gaza city. Separately, two other Palestinians (gravel collectors) were wounded by Israeli gunfire in Beit Lahiya northern gaza, this brought the total number of people injured on Wednesday to 15.
In the early hours of Thursday, Israeli warplanes carried out a series of air strikes across the gaza strip targeting training sites used by Hamas resistance men, the Israeli army claimed the air strikes were in response to a grad rocket that was fired from Gaza and landed in Bearshiva city in southern Israel.
However, People say Israeli tanks conduct almost daily ground incursions into different bordering areas, razing agriculture fields and opening fire at farmers and gravel collectors.

Israeli army and settlers destroy olive trees near Beit Ommar - Palestine

Army, Settlers, Destroy Palestinian Olive Trees in Al-Jab’a
Source: Palestine Solidarity Project

On the morning of Tuesday, February 22, 2011, Israeli Forces, along with the Israeli Civil Administration and several settlers, used two bulldozers and chainsaws to destroy Palestinian olive trees in Al-Jab’a, a small village to the north of Beit Ommar. All of the trees on 200 dunums of land were cut down. Additionally, several irrigation walls on these lands were bulldozed.

The trees belong to several Palestinian farmers, including Mousa Hamdan Abu Loha, Azat Abu Latifa, Ibrahim Mahmoud Abu Loha, Ahmad Sobhia, and Mohammad Abed Al-Latif.

The land where the trees were destroyed were located alongside the Israeli settlement of Bat Ayn. Settlers from Bat Ayn were seen felling trees with chainsaws while soldiers operated the bulldozers. Settlers then piled the pieces of cut up trees into cars.

Al-Jab’a is a small village of around 900 people that is situated west of Bethlehem and north of Beit Ommar. Al-Jab’a lies on the Green Line, the dividing line between Israel and the West Bank. The village is surrounded by settlements, with Gush Etzion to the east, Betar Illit to the north, and Bat Ayn to the south. Israeli settlers, particularly from Bat Ayn, periodically harass the villagers of Al-Jab’a with impunity. Additionally, the main road connecting Al-Jab’a to the nearby village of Surif is blocked by the Israeli Authorities.

Jerusalem Racist Attacks

Jerusalem Racist Attacks:

"aicvideo | Feb 23, 2011

24-year-old Palestinian Hussam Rwidy was killed in the early morning hours of Friday February 13, when he and a friend, Murad Khader Joulani, were returning home from work. Family members say that a group of extremist Israelis yelled 'Death to Arabs' before assaulting the two near Hillel Street in West Jerusalem. While the Israeli police and media portrayed Rwidy's murder as the product of a drunken brawl, the Rwidy family and its supporters say this line of reasoning is not only false, but serves as a way for the Israeli authorities to avoid accurately defining the attack as racially motivated. For more infromation, visit http://alternativenews.org.

UPDATE (23/02, 3PM): Yedioth Aharonot is reporting that four suspects have been arrested in relation to Rwidy's death, and are being charged with manslaughter. Israeli police have stated that it was racially-motivated. (YNET Article, Hebrew only: http://www.ynet.co.il/articles/0,7340...

Israeli forces attack Gaza

PressTV - Israeli airstrikes injure 16 Gazans:

"Fresh Israeli strikes have left at least 16 people injured -- two in a critical condition, witnesses and security sources say.

Israel's F-16 warplanes and Apache helicopters carried out multiple airstrikes on late Wednesday early on Thursday across the Gaza Strip, a Press TV correspondent reported.

An Israeli tank opened fire on a group of Palestinians in the east of Gaza City. The Islamic Jihad movement said that three of its members were injured by Israeli tanks firing from positions inside Gaza late Wednesday.

Separately, two other Palestinians were wounded by Israeli gunfire in Beit Lahiya.

And in yet another attack, Israeli drones targeted the east of Gaza City, injuring at least two people.

Israeli F-16s as well as Apache fighter helicopters also hovered over the Gaza City, where witnesses reported two intensive explosions.

Meanwhile, Hamas said it has evacuated all its security posts, police stations and government buildings as it expects more Israeli attacks.

PressTV - Israeli fire injures 13 Palestinians:

"At least thirteen Palestinians, including children, have been injured in two separate Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip, medics say.

The incident took place during a brief incursion by Israeli forces into eastern Gaza City on Wednesday, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Eleven Palestinians were injured after an Israeli tank shell hit eastern part of the Gaza City.

The incident came shortly after a number of Israeli tanks and bulldozers rolled into the Palestinian territory in an apparent effort to destroy agricultural lands along the occupied border zone.

Three members of the Al-Quds Brigades, the armed wing of Islamic Jihad, and three children are among the injured.

'Three of our fighters were injured while firing two mortar shells towards Israeli tanks which were operating inside the (Gaza) border,' a statement released by the group said.

Some of the injured are reported to be in critical condition, Gaza emergency services Chief Adham Abu Selmeya said, adding that they had been taken to the city's Shifa hospital.

Separately, two Palestinian workers were shot and injured by Israeli gunfire as they were collecting cement particles left behind from the houses that were destroyed in north of the town of Beit Lahiya near the border during the Israeli war on Gaza at the turn of 2009.

Due to a crippling Israeli blockade, Palestinians living in Gaza have no other choice but to obtain the required material for construction work from other buildings that have been destroyed in Israeli attacks.

Since March 2010, more than one hundred Palestinians have been shot by Israeli soldiers while collecting construction material.

Israel laid an economic siege on the Gaza Strip in June 2007 after Hamas took control of the enclave.

The Israeli-imposed blockade has had a disastrous impact on the humanitarian and economic situation in the Gaza Strip.

Some 1.5 million people are being denied their basic rights, including freedom of movement, and their rights to appropriate living conditions, work, health and education. Poverty and unemployment rates stand at approximately 80 percent and 60 percent, respectively, in the Gaza Strip.

More than 1,400 Palestinians were killed during the three-week Israeli land, sea and air offensive in the impoverished coastal sliver during the winter of 2008-2009. The offensive also inflicted $ 1.6 billion damage to the Gazan economy.

A United Nations inquiry led by the former South African judge, Richard Goldstone, detailed what investigators called Israeli actions 'amounting to war crimes, possibly crimes against humanity,' during Israel's offensive against the Gaza Strip.

Israeli military destroys Palestinian village - Amniyr, South Hebron Hills, West Bank

Israeli military destroys village - Amniyr, South Hebron Hills, West Bank:

"AtTuwaniProject | Feb 22, 2011

22 February 2011 - At 5 AM this morning the Israeli army, accompanied by members of the Israeli District Coordinating Office, arrived at the village of Amniyr and demolished five tent-houses, two cisterns and the village's olive trees. The demolitions effectively destroyed the entire village and left its three families homeless. All that remained unharmed after the military left was a cave and a small taboun oven.

According to villagers, the military had been coming frequently for the past several months and delivering demolition orders and maps claiming that the village was on Israeli state land, and that their homes would be demolished unless everyone left.

Residents of Amniyr told CPT that they have suffered from years of settler and army harrassment. Years ago, members of the Jaboor family lived in the cave in Amniyr, but Israeli military and settler harassment forced them to move to a different area a few kilometers away. The harrassment continued in their new location, however, convincing the family to move back to tents close to their original cave just over a year ago.

What was once a small village is now a pile of dirt mounds, uprooted olive trees and shattered clocks and dishware.

'Where are we supposed to sleep tonight?' said Moath Jaboor, who lived in a tent with his mother. 'We'll have to rebuild our homes so that we can sleep.'

Operation Dove and Christian Peacemaker Teams have maintained an international presence in At-Tuwani and South Hebron Hills since 2004.

Irish journalist David Cronin attempts citizens arrest on Lieberman in Brussels

David Cronin attempts citizens arrest on Lieberman in Brussels:

"EUXTV | Feb 22, 2011 | 86 likes, 15 dislikes

Irish journalist David Cronin, correspondent for IPS and commentator for The Guardian, on Tuesday attempted a citizens arrest on Israel's Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman in EU Council, he was quickly escorted from the conference room before the press meeting started.

Interview with David Cronin, on his Lieberman arrest attempt.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soEXzX...

It's the second time that Cronin attempted a citizens arrest in Brussels. In March last year, Cronin attempted to place Tony Blair under a citizen's arrest for his role in the invasion of Iraq, during a visit by the former UK prime minister to the European Parliament for a hearing on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Cronin has published extensively on EU relations with Israel.

According to the Guardian.co.uk website, David Cronin is the Brussels correspondent of Inter Press Service news agency.

Born in Dublin in 1971, he wrote for a variety of Irish publications before moving to Belgium in 1995. After working as a research assistant and press officer in the European parliament, he became the European correspondent with The Sunday Tribune, Dublin, in 1998. He then worked as political correspondent for European Voice, a weekly newspaper owned by The Economist, from 2001 until 2006.

He has also written about rock, jazz and world music for The Bulletin, the main English-language magazine targeting expatriates living in Belgium, and for the Wall Street Journal Europe.

This video is an excerpt from the official video footage made available via the EU's Europe by Satellite service.

Cronin explains his attempted arrest of Israel's Lieberman:

"EUXTV | Feb 23, 2011

Irish journalist David Cronin made international news headlines on Tuesday when he attempted a citizen's arrest on Avigdor Lieberman, the Israeli Foreign Minister in the EU Council in Brussels.

Cronin is an author and long time pro-Palestininan activist. He previously attempted to place former UK PM Tony Blair under Citizen's arrest, failing in both attempts so far.

His action's have led to him having his journalist accreditation revoked, a small price to pay, he says.

While the European Union hopes to be a major player in solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and presents itself as being an honest broker, analysts say that the EU has taken a decidedly pro-Israel stance.
