Israeli settlements to be determining issue in peace talks:

"AlJazeeraEnglish | August 30, 2010

The building of new Israeli settlements on Palestinian territory will be one of the key and determining issues in upcoming peace talks that will be held in the US capital Washington DC.

Israel has been criticised by all sides, including the US, for its illegal construction of thousands of new homes, which have been separated by an imposing wall.

Nour Odeh reports from the Palestinian village of Al-Walajeh in the West Bank, where many are suffering from the unlawful settelements.

Middle East Talks 20-08-2010 [w/ Osama Hamdan and Abdallah Abdallah]

Note: It is interesting to hear what Abdallah Abdallah had to say about conditions if Abbas was to join talks @(9:45), something Abbas totally ignored, as usual, which proves the very point of criticism against the PA, i.e. their uncontrollable urge to please their masters in Israel and Washington.

Israel Insists On Settlement Resumption - Special Report

[Press TV News] Israel Insists On Settlement Resumption - Special Report:

"shabbirh | August 30, 2010

Israel insists on settlement resumption

Less than a week ahead of the US-backed talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, Tel Aviv insists on resuming its West Bank settlement expansions.

In November, Israel announced a 10-month freeze on West Bank settlements which excluded the projects in East al-Quds (Jerusalem) and allowed construction of schools, synagogues and 'community centers.'

'There is a government decision to freeze construction only for 10 months, and when that period ends, the decision is no longer valid,' Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a meeting of Likud ministers on Sunday, the Jerusalem Post reported.

The remarks came in response to reconciliatory proposals by Intelligence Minister Dan Meridor and other Israeli cabinet members allow resumption of settlement construction, albeit only within large settlements and not beyond the 1967 borders.

This is while the Palestinian side has shrugged off all the responsibility for a failure in talks, saying only Tel Aviv will be to blame if the negotiations fail over Israeli settlements.

Despite repeated warnings by the Palestinians to withdraw from the US-backed talks, Netanyahu has described Israel's settlements as one of the core issues to be discussed in the negotiations scheduled for September 2 in Washington, saying he would make no declarations before then.

Netanyahu said any peace agreement should be based on the recognition of Israel as 'the national state of the Jewish people,' and assurance that Israel would not face the same failure it did after withdrawing from southern Lebanon and the Gaza Strip -- where Tel Aviv is viewed as an illegitimate, occupying force.

Israel's Geshuri Chemical Factories in Tulkarem

The introduction I added below is from an Information Brief posted at the Palestine Center
'The Environmental Impact of the Israeli Occupation,' by Jad Isaac

Relocation of Israeli Industries:

Israel has moved many of its polluting industries from Israel to the Occupied Territories. For example, Geshuri Industries, a manufacturer of pesticides and fertilizers originally located in Kfar Saba in Israel, was closed down by Israeli court order in 1982 for pollution violations. In 1987, it relocated to an area adjacent to Tulkarm inside the West Bank, where its waste has damaged citrus trees, polluted the soil, and possibly poisoned the groundwater. The Dixon industrial gas factory, formerly located in Netanya inside Israel, has also moved into the same area.

Toxic Apartheid Israel in the West Bank city of Tulkarem
category galway | rights and freedoms | news report Tuesday March 23, 2010 23:41

Spreading like the cancer that the output from the factory induces

Toxic Apartheid Israel : Specialising in the manufacture of pesticides, fertilisers and other chemicals, the Israeli company, Geshuri, forced to leave the Israeli coastal city of Netanyana on account of its plants toxic emissions simply relocated to land, stolen for the purpose, on the outskirts of the Palestinian city of Tulkarem in the north-east of the West Bank where the pollution, unabated and continues apace.

Following a court case in Israel, it was moved to Tulkarem in the mid-eighties. The Geshuri complex of factories sited in the shadow of the Apartheid-Annexation Wall has been expanding ever since, spreading like the cancer that the output from the factory induces. In addition to the land confiscation, the factory has a severe deleterious effect on the health of the local community. 2.5 dunums in the immediate vicinity of the factory have been polluted to the point where they are no longer agriculturally viable. Trees in the area are decaying; those that remain alive exhibit stunted growth. Pollution from the factory also widely affects other agricultural land in Tulkarem and has seeped into underground water sources in the area. Noxious carcinogenic fumes from the Geshuri factory have also adversely affected the health of the population. Respiratory problems and eye infections, which are most likely to afflict the very young and elderly, are the most commonly reported problems. It is also believed by medical experts that the pollution caused by the plant has led to cancer cases, although to confirm this no studies have been carried out to date. With the processing of household waste in the Geshuri Industrial Park there are attendant rat infestations.

The chemical complex is beyond the control and power of the PA as the Israeli occupying "Civil Administration" watch over and protect it - where for 11 months of the year the prevailing west to east winds blow the emissions into Tulkakem and in the one month when the winds shift direction and blow from east to west into Israel the factories cease their carcinogenic activities.

Tulkarem activist Faiz Al Tanib spearheads the campaign against the Geshuri complex and the Apartheid-Annexation Wall.

We also went to one of the weekly demonstrations and on this third Friday of Ramadan both here and Bilin and other places showed several injuries and use of excessive power by the Israeli occupation/apartheid army. The demonstrations commemorated the assassination of famous Palestinian Cartoonist Naji Al Ali and of the leade of the PFLP Abu Ali Mustafa. It also came in solidarity with the 'conviction' by Israel's apartheid courts of Abdullah AbuRahma on charges of organizing nonviolent demonstrations in Bilin. I posted 5 minute of the video I took of the event here. Please watch especially the unprovoked abduction of Kobi, an Israeli peace activist. They also detained Matan (not shown on video) who was released a short while later. Kobi was released also but will have to face trial later in an apartheid court.

Separating Palestinian Farmers from Their Land
Go to the Other Gate:

"unrwa | August 25, 2010

West Bank farmers face a daily ordeal trying to reach their land on the other side of the West Bank Barrier. The farmers have to navigate their way through the bewildering system of permits, opening hours and bizarrely numbered gates that are operated by the Israeli Border Police. The film features two United Nations Operations Support Officers who help farmers from the villages of Biddu and Beit Izja six kilometres northeast of Jerusalem to try to reach their land one morning in June 2010. Despite pre-coordination between the UN and the Israeli District Coordination Office, the morning becomes a waiting game and a race between the gates for the farmers. When the Border Police arrive at the one of the gates the day is almost lost for working in the fields. The UN Operations Officers try in vane to convince the Israeli Border Police keep the gate open long enough for farmers who had waited at the wrong gate. Production: UNRWA

Armed Israeli Settlers and Lack of Police Response Provoked Clashes in East Jerusalem

Resumed clashes in the Wadi Hilweh neighborhood of Silwan « Wadi Hilweh Information Center – Silwan: "Resumed clashes in the Wadi Hilweh neighborhood of Silwan
Friday, 27 August, 2010 [Palestine time]

Clashes between the armed guards of the settlers and Palestinian youths of Silwan resumed tonight in the Ein Silwan street in Wadi Hilweh neighborhood. There were no reports of injuries.

Armed settler guards attack mosque in Wadi Hilweh; shots fired at Palestinian residents « Wadi Hilweh Information Center – Silwan:

"Violence has swept through Wadi Hilweh again as Israeli settler security guards attempted to storm the neighborhood mosque, in what marks the third time such an attack has been launched on the local religious site. Settler guards fired live ammunition at Palestinian residents in the ensuing clashes that erupted.

Police claim that stones were thrown at the occupied home of Khader al-Qaq in Wadi Hilweh last night. Three hours later a group of armed Elad settler guards attempted to storm the Wadi Hilweh mosque, using a fire extinguisher to try and break through the door. As the mosque’s emergency call sounded out from the minarets, the guards attempted to flee the scene. Palestinians of Wadi Hilweh flocked to the site of the attack to defend their mosque, where skirmishes soon broke out between residents and settler guards. Shots were fired by armed settler guards at Palestinian residents during the clashes.

Wadi Hilweh resident Mohammad Qaraeen stated that when he tried to alert the police to the attack, the police officer on duty hung up on him. When he tried to call a second time, the police did not arrive until several hours afterwards.

The area was invaded soon after by a large force of Israeli military and Border Police, stationed in the nearby suburb of Baten el-Hawa. The invading forces immediately began firing rounds of tear gas projectiles at crowds of Palestinian residents, causing widespread suffocation as a result of gas inhalation. A fire was started by a group of angry youths at the entrance to Aid el-Hamra, an area under control of the Elad tourism-settlement project “City of David”, in response to the secondary invasion of their community. Residents and journalists were then prevented from accessing the area by Israeli forces, who began firing rubber bullets, tear gas projectiles and sound bombs at the crowd.

Eyewitnesses report that Israeli soldiers attempted to arrest a Palestinian child during the clashes. The entire area of Wadi Hilweh was then cordoned off by the Israeli military, blocking all entrances to the neighborhood.

Maan News Agency: Silwan residents say settlers provoked clash:

"JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem's Silwan neighborhood said settlers attempted to enter the Al-Ein Mosque early Thursday morning, sparking skirmishes that lasted until after sunrise.

Israeli forces arrived as locals said they were attempting to drive the settlers out of the mosque area. Two settler cars were torched, and several windshields smashed in the violence.

The incoming border police force was described as 'massive,' and said to have been firing tear-gas canisters and rubber-coated bullets toward Palestinians.

Firefighters called to put out the car blazes were reportedly confronted by angered residents in the area, Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz reported. According to the newspaper, four cars and two motorcycles were set alight.

A 22-year-old settler was said to have been injured, and the paper quoted a settler leader from the area, denying claims that an attempt to gain access to the mosque had caused the clash.

Israeli police said they were looking into the incident.

In the West Bank, three recent incidents of settlers vandalizing mosques have put residents on edge. In December, a Yasuf village mosque was torched and twelve settlers from the Yizhar settlement detained for their role in the incident. Also in the Nablus region, settlers torched a second mosque in May, Al-Lubban Ash-Sharqiya villagers said settlers drove up to the mosque, gathered flammables, and set them alight.

In June, officials from the Islamic Waqf said a recent wave of settlers moving into Jaffa, a Palestinain city now south of Tel Aviv, attempted to set ablaze the Jaffa Mosque as it was undergoing repairs.
