IAEA chief Amano visits Israel
International Atomic Energy Agency chief Yukiya Amano has visited Israel for talks with President Shimon Peres. The Israeli president defended his nation's policy of not signing the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.
Amano held talks with Peres on Wednesday. He assumed the post of IAEA director general last December and is the first head of the agency to visit Israel in 6 years.
Peres said Iran's nuclear program is for military purposes. He said President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's remark calling for the annihilation of Israel suggests that Iran would use nuclear arms.
Peres also said the world cannot ignore the fact that Israel is under constant threat, and he effectively justified Israel's refusal to join the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty or to reveal whether it possesses nuclear weapons.
The IAEA will discuss the Israeli nuclear issue at its general conference in September where Amano will submit a report.
Israel does not allow IAEA inspections of its largest nuclear facility.
