Israel orders destruction of 2 mosques

Israel has ordered the destruction of two newly built Palestinian mosques in the West Bank amid plans for the resumption of long-stalled peace talks next month.


The Israeli civil administration issued the demolition order under the pretext that the mosques lacked construction permits, Israeli daily Haaretz reported on Monday.

One of the mosques is located near Burin village while the other one is close to Jalazoun village.

The order comes at a time when the Muslim people of the Palestinian territory are observing the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

Israel's latest order to destroy the mosques and its continuation of settlement activities in the occupied territories, especially in East al-Quds (Jerusalem), may cast a shadow over peace talks.

The first round of direct negotiations is due to be held in Washington on September 2 after acting Palestinian Authority chief Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed to the revival of talks.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian Authority has expressed concern that Israel's ongoing settlement activities, home demolitions, evictions, land confiscations and ID revocations could undermine talks.
