"Ayman Nofel, a senior Hamas commander has returned to his home in the central Gaza Strip after spending 3 years in Abu Za'bal prison in Egypt.

He arrived in Gaza via underground tunnel under Gaza-Egypt border after he managed to escape from the Egyptian prison last week which was raided by locals in anti-government protests a week ago.

Nofal was arrested in early 2008 over accusations of involvement in bomb attacks in Egypt. He was one of several other prisoners who have escaped when thousands broke out of prisons across Egypt amid protests which sparked against Mubarak's 30 year rule. According to Palestinian official figures, 39 Palestinians are being held in Egyptian prisons.

Egypt insisted on holding them despite court rulings ordering their releases. During the last couple of days, 6 of them have managed to retune to Gaza including Motasem Al-Goga who spent 7 years in Egypt.
Last week, Egypt shut its Rafah crossing with the Gaza Strip after anti-government protests spread to the border area.

Egyptian soldiers isolated on the Gaza border are getting bread, canned goods and other food supplies from Hamas security forces.
Many here accuse Egypt of being complicit in Israel's ongoing 3-year land and sea blockade on the tiny coastal strip of Gaza's 1.6 million people, in an attempt to weaken Hamas-ruled Gaza which has been in control of the territory since mid June 2007 after it won the parliamentary elections the year before.
