"Despite Palestinian opposition to Israeli settlement activities, plans are being put in place by the Jerusalem Municipality to build an Israeli army base that will house military colleges in East Jerusalem Al Quds.

Reports indicate the base will be established beyond the pre-1967 borders. According to a document obtained by the Israeli Newspaper Haaretz, the army base will be located on Mount Scopus, between the Mormon University and the Augusta Victoria Hospital, both well into Palestinian territories.

The base will encompass 8 acres of land and will include a command and staff school, a school for national security, military academy learning institutes, a swimming pool, a gym and more.

Haaretz further claims that construction plans to build the base have already been set into motion, and that the Jerusalem municipality has hired an architect to prepare the initial blueprint for the project.

Palestinians strongly oppose Israeli settlement activities especially in East Jerusalem Al Quds where they want to have their capital in the future Palestinian state.

The municipality disputes this claim, stating that the base will be built within the green line, however, the findings according to Haaretz has revealed otherwise, indicating the base will in fact encroach upon Palestinian territories in East Jerusalem Al Quds.

This coincides with recent announcements by Israel to build 120 settlement units in Ramot and Pisgat zeev in occupied east Jerusalem Al Quds

This also comes in the context of encircling Arab East Jerusalem /Al quds with what is known as the Israeli ring neighborhoods that consist of five suburban neighborhoods built on Palestinian territory occupied by Israel in the six day war of 1967 and later unilaterally annexed..

The international community considers Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem Al Quds illegal under international law.

Israel settlement building has been relentless, despite Palestinian opposition and wide international condemnation. To build an army base on this scale is unprecedented, a move that will dash hopes for Palestinians for an Israeli withdrawal from the city and a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
