Bethlehem - Ma'an - Dozens of protesters choked on tear gas Friday in the occupied West Bank village of Nabi Salih, west of Ramallah, protesters said, while Israel said a border police officer was injured by rocks.
An estimated 200 human rights advocates, among them international and Israeli solidarity activists, joined the weekly Palestinian protest against Israel's wall. Participants insisted the protest was generally peaceful.
Bashir At-Tamimi, head of the Nabi Salih village council, said "Israeli soldiers attacked the rally, showering [participants] with rubber-coated bullets and tear-gas canisters. Dozens were injured after inhaling gas."
At-Tamimi added: "Israeli forces chased protestors into the village, fired gas canisters at their homes, and sprayed houses with sewage water, injuring several women and children, who fainted after inhaling fumes."
An Israeli army spokeswoman rejected that the event was peaceful, terming it a violent and illegal riot.
"About 200 Palestinian rioters and Israeli citizens violently rioted" in the village, she said. Forces on the scene used riot-control measures to disperse the crowd, the military official added.
A border policeman was lightly injured by rocks and evacuated for medical treatment, the spokeswoman said, while Israeli media reported that a second border police officer was also lightly injured.

Facing tear gas, rubber-coated steel bullets and live ammunition, roughly sixty Palestinians gathered outside of Ni’lin today. Joined by 15 Israeli and International activists, the demonstrators protested the Israeli occupation which has claimed over 40% of the village’s land.
After congregating in nearby olive groves for midday prayers, demonstrators marched towards the illegal annexation wall with flags and chants led by village youth. Upon reaching the wall, demonstrators were met with a violent military response. Claiming nearly 30% of remaining village land, the wall annexes Ni’lin farmland for use by the nearby illegal settlement Modi’in Ilit. Soldiers fired tear gas and percussion grenades over the wall at nonviolent demonstrators, who were not deterred and continued a spirited protest.
Soldiers then invaded the village’s olive groves, firing live ammunition, rubber-coated steel bullets and tear gas. The use of live ammunition has claimed the lives of five Ni’lin residents since May 2008. No injuries were reported today.
Background on Nil’in:
Israel began construction of the Wall on Ni’lin’s land in 2004, but stopped after an injunction order issued by the Israeli Supreme Court (ISC). Despite the previous order and a 2004 ruling from the International Court of Justice declaring the Wall illegal, construction of the Wall began again in May 2008. Following the return of Israeli bulldozers to their lands, residents of Ni’lin have launched a grassroots campaign to protest the massive land theft, including demonstrations and direct actions.
The original route of the Wall, which Israel began constructing in 2004, was ruled illegal by the ISC, as was a second, marginally less obtrusive proposed route (http://www.poica.org/editor/case_studies/view.php?recordID=622). The most recent path, now completed, still cuts deep into Ni’lin’s land. The Wall has been built to include plans, not yet approved by the Army’s planning authority, for a cemetery and an industrial zone for the illegal settlement Modi’in Ilit.
Since the Wall was built to annex more land to the nearby settlements rather than in a militarily strategic manner, demonstrators have been able to repeatedly dismantle parts of the electronic fence and razor-wire surrounding it. Consequently, the army has erected a 15-25 feet tall concrete wall, in addition to the electronic fence. The section of the Wall in Ni’lin is the only part of the route where a concrete wall has been erected in response to civilian, unarmed protest.
As a result of the Wall construction, Ni’lin has lost 3,920 dunams, roughly 30% of its remaining lands. Originally, Ni’lin consisted of 15,898 dunams (3928 acres). Post 1948, Ni’lin was left with 14,794 dunams (3656 acres). After the occupation of the West Bank in 1967, the illegal settlements and infrastructure of Modi’in Ilit, Mattityahu and Hashmonaim were built on village lands, and Ni’lin lost another 1,973 dunams. Ni’lin is effectively split into 2 parts (upper and lower) by Road 446, which was built directly through the village. The protesters arrested by the army constitute roughly 9% of the village’s male residents aged between 12 and 55. Shortly after 2pm, the Israeli occupation forces invaded the village of Bil'in from two different directions once again. They raided two houses in an attempt to arrest Mohammed Ahmed Yasseen (age 21), and Yasseen Mohammed Yasseen (age 21). In the first house soldiers were quite aggressive during their operation. Neither of the wanted men was home at the time.
At the second house, the soldiers, disguised with face masks as usual, met a lot of resistance from Palestinian and international activists who were standing in their way and filming the event. As they did not find their victim, they eventually retreated to the four waiting Jeeps, arresting one international activist from Great Britain on their way. Yet, according to their conversation in Hebrew, they planned to release him a little further on their way toward the Apartheid Wall. He was indeed released a few minutes later before they exited through the Wall.
This has been the second night raid this week. It seems that the Israeli forces are stepping up their night raids again in Bil'in."

Bil'in residents and Israeli and international activists once again held their weekly demonstration today. Despite lots of tear gas being fired by the Israeli forces, the protesters stood their ground. They displayed huge banners 'We Want Peace' in Arabic, Hebrew, and English while chanting. One demonstrator in a wheelchair was heavily tear-gased at some point and another suffered from skin burns from the gas.
Once some of the protesters had succeeded in pulling the barbed-wired inner gate open passing through it toward the Apartheid Wall, half a dozen soldiers stormed through the door in the Wall ready to arrest whoever was in the open space. However, tear gas drove them back while the protesters in the front lines retreated behind the gate. The occupation forces remained in a position of alert but no arrests were made. As the demonstrators returned to the village, the Israeli forces heavily tear-gased the house closest to the Wall where a Palestinian man was sitting watching the unfolding event.
In spite of the army's violent response to these nonviolent demonstrations and the ongoing intimidating night raids in Bil'in, the weekly demonstration continues to be held without fail. The sense of resistance to the military occupation is deeply ingrained in the people of this village. They have been resisting since the construction of the Wall five years ago, and they are determined to continue their struggle in spite of all odds."

"On August 21st 2009, we joined local Palestinian farmers and members of Palestine Solidarity Project at a nonviolent action near the security fence [read apartheid wall] around Karmei Zur settlement. This settlement is near the village of Beit Ummar, half way between Bethlehem and Hebron.
The army have apparently agreed to allow the farmers access their land inside the fence: however, the local farmers dont see why they should have to ask the army to go to lands which they legally own. As has happened in other places, the farmers see this as the slippery slope to a permit system and eventually to being excluded altogether. (I have seen the same thing in Hebron city, where Palestinians are either barred from using certain roads, or are now required to have permits to go where they traveled freely before.)
Also present were a number of other internationals, some Israelis from Tel Aviv, as well as some journalists. The group walked to the outer security fence of the Karmi Zur settlement. Two Palestinian activists/farmers inserted papers with the slogans we will never leave our land, stop illegal building on Palestinian land on the fence'. Two of the landowners joined the group. They showed copies of ownership papers the Ottoman period.
On the video, you can see part of the new road being built, for the settlers, on Palestinian land, between the settlement and the security fence built by the military. ِِIn addition, a watchtower is going to be erected.
When the army arrived, we spoke to one of the soldiers. He was able to have a respectful talk, even though he wasnt accepting that their presence there legalized theft. Oh yes, he said, we all want peace and love. He said the fence was built after attacks on settlers by the terrorists.
The names of the families who cant access their land are Abu-Marya, Soleiby, Awwad, Abu Ayyesh, and Sabarna. Since the security fence was built, the army either prevents access, or wants farmers to co-ordinate their access with them. Several of the Palestinian farmers here are refusing to seek permission to access land which is legally theirs. They have also turned down offers of large sums of money for their land.
Polite conversation with the soldier ended when an armed and aggressive settler security person arrived. He shouted insults at the internationals, and Go back to Germany and Go back to the Holocaust to an activist who identified himself as Jewish. He then opened the gate in the fence, insisting that the army disperse the activists. We all left. The army followed behind, then randomly seized an international, who was detained then later released.

At today's weekly demonstration, two protesters were hit by tear gas canisters, which caused them minor skin burns. One person suffered from severe respiratory problems when being caught in heavy gas. No medical treatment was needed, however.
As the demonstrators reached the wall, the Israeli occupation forces watched passively at first. Then, some time into the gathering, multiple tear gas reached the crowd to disperse it. The protesters remained in the front lines spite of it, claiming their rights, and challenging the Apartheid Wall and the Israeli military occupation.
Some of the demonstrators tried to open the inner gate and then walked toward the Wall with Palestinian flags. They addressed the soldiers from there and attached one of the flags at the Wall. Five soldiers stormed through the door in the Wall in an attempt to arrest anyone at the Wall while tear gas clouded the area. They retreated without making any arrests.
The demonstration ended without any further incident.

Around 2:30am, the Israeli occupation forces invaded Bil'in again. They raided two houses but no arrests were made.
They raided the house where Hamza Burnat (age 16) lives and attempted to arrest him, but he was not at home at the time. They also raided the house where Yaseen Mohammed Ali Yaseen (age 21) lives but could not find him either. And house of Mohamed Ahmed Yaseen.
During the raid at both houses, Palestinian and international activists challenged the soldiers standing guard outside. At today's weekly demonstration, two protesters were hit by tear gas canisters, which caused them minor skin burns. One person suffered from severe respiratory problems when being caught in heavy gas. No medical treatment was needed, however.
As the demonstrators reached the wall, the Israeli occupation forces watched passively at first. Then, some time into the gathering, multiple tear gas reached the crowd to disperse it. The protesters remained in the front lines spite of it, claiming their rights, and challenging the Apartheid Wall and the Israeli military occupation.
Some of the demonstrators tried to open the inner gate and then walked toward the Wall with Palestinian flags. They addressed the soldiers from there and attached one of the flags at the Wall. Five soldiers stormed through the door in the Wall in an attempt to arrest anyone at the Wall while tear gas clouded the area. They retreated without making any arrests.
The demonstration ended without any further incident.

Around 2:30am, the Israeli occupation forces invaded Bil'in again. They raided two houses but no arrests were made.
They raided the house where Hamza Burnat (age 16) lives and attempted to arrest him, but he was not at home at the time. They also raided the house where Yaseen Mohammed Ali Yaseen (age 21) lives but could not find him either. And house of Mohamed Ahmed Yaseen.
During the raid at both houses, Palestinian and international activists challenged the soldiers standing guard outside. "Twenty five protesters were injured today following the end of the 4th Annual International Conference of Popular Resistance in Bilin. Injuries ranged from light to moderate and most were caused by rubber coated steel bullets.
The Bilin conference this week was attended by a large number of international, Israeli and Palestinian activists. Also at the conference were Luisa Morgantini, vice president of the EU Parliament; Mairead Maguire, a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate; Mustafa Al Barghouti, head of the Palestinian Initiative; Khalidah Jarrar, a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council. The demonstrators began their marched after closing the conference. They carried pictures of the martyr Bassem Ab Rahmah and succeeded in building a memorial for Bassem Abu Rahmah near the gate, despite a constant barrage of tear gas and rubber bullets fired by the Israeli army.
Luisa Morgantini stated, We succeeded to build the memorial for Bassem Abu Rahmah, as respect for his spirit. We will never forget him; he was a friend of everyone. We have to continue the popular resistance which has begun to expand to the Jordan valley, Al Maasarah, Nilin, and Jayyous.
Mairead Maguire said We came to Bilin more than five times and we went to Gaza also, we are going to continue our struggle to end the occupation and the siege. What happened in Bilin and losing Bassem is a tragedy to everyone. Lets all work together for peace and end the oppression and occupation. Maguire and Morgantini expressed their condolences to Bassems family."

On Friday Israeli soldiers violently attacked the weekly non-violent protest against the Annexation Wall in Bil’in village, near the central West Bank city of Ramallah, injuring 25 protesters. 13 soldiers were reportedly injured in clashes that took place after the army attacked the protestors.
Dozens of residents and peace activists marched towards the Wall and settlements chanting slogans in memory of Bassem Abu Rahma, who was killed by the army in the previous week's protest.
Israeli soldiers fired rubber-coated bullets and gas bombs at the protesters. Two local reporters, Fadi Al Arouri of Reuters and Moheeb Al Barghouthi of Al Hayat Al Jadeeda Newspaper were among those injured. Shai Pollack, an Israeli peace activist, was also wounded.
Local sources in Bil’in identified the wounded local protesters as Fadil Al Khateeb, Odah Abu Rahma, his brother Ahmad, Eyad Bornat, his brother Riyadh, Khalid Al Khateeb, Abdullah Abu Rahma, Mohammad Al Khateeb, Wael Fahmi, Taeq Al Khateeb, Abdullah Yassin, Tamer Al Khateeb, Nizar Abu Rahma, Mohammad Abu Rahma, Ibrahim Bornat, Adeeb Abu Rahma, and Ahmad Abu Rahma, brother of Bassim Abu Rahma, the man killed by the army last week.
The protest began after the conclusion of the Fourth Annual Conference on Non-violent Resistance in Bil’in.
Among those who took part in the conference were delegations from South Africa, the Catalan government, and Luisa Morgantini, vice-president of the European Parliament as well as Palestinian officials PM Salam Fayyad, Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi, Secretary-general of the Palestinian National Initiative, and member of the Legislative Council Khalida Jarrar.
The protesters erected a memorial to Bassem Abu Rahma in spite of the army’s attacks on them.

Ni’lin villagers once again held a Friday demonstration against the illegal Apartheid Wall and in commemoration of Prisoner’s Day. Around 150 villagers, supported by Israeli and international solidarity activists, gathered after the prayer at the local clinic. Several demonstrators wore shirts urging solidarity with the thousands of Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli jails. Israeli forces stationed in the fields in the outskirts of the village started firing tear gas at the clinic even before the prayer was finished. The nonviolent demonstrators sought cover in the village from the gas, and retreated back towards the town center. However, Israeli soldiers also stationed themselves on the main street of the village. These soldiers started firing tear gas and live ammunition at the villagers gathered in the village center. Some of the village youth responded to this use of weaponry by throwing stones.
During the following hours, one male resident was hit by a fragment from a live bullet in his chest and 11 people needed medical treatment after inhaling large amounts of tear gas. Israeli forces also placed snipers on several roofs in the village, from which they shot at demonstrators near Ni’lin’s main street. Soldiers also attacked the Palestinian medical team inside the village and shot large amounts of tear gas at an ambulance.
At this Friday demonstration, the Israeli army once again shot extended range high velocity tear gas canisters. This is the same type of canister that was used to kill Basem Abu Rahme at a nonviolent demonstration in Bil’in on the same day. On the 13 March, American solidarity activist Tristan Anderson was critically injured after being shot in the head with a high velocity tear gas canister. Tristan is still listed in critical condition in a Tel Aviv hospital after undergoing three separate brain surgeries.

"This Friday some 15 Israelis and 15 internationals joined a few dozen Palestinians in their weekly demo in Bil'in. The demonstration's theme was Palestinian prisoners' day, and the demo was headed by people carrying posters demanding the release of Palestinians held by the Israeli occupation forces. As usual, upon reaching the fence the demo was met with stun and gas grenades. The strong wind blew in the direction of the demonstrators and spread the gas among them, so only a small group of demonstrators managed to stay close to the fence. This, however, only encouraged the soldiers to keep shooting relatively large amounts of gas and other ammunition. The first victim was a French demonstrator superficially wounded in her face by a rebound shrapnel. Shortly after, a soldier shot an extended range gas projectile from a few meters away directly at Bassem Abu Rahme who was standing at the fence, knocked him over, left a gaping hole in the middle of his torso, and put him into respiratory distress and shock. Since no ambulance was at the scene, Bassem (a.k.a. Phil, aged 30) was evacuated in a private car toward Ramallah. Some demonstrators stayed by the fence for a while, but as the last of them left the scene, the news of Bassem's death reached the village."
