Al-Jazeera on Israel's war games 31 May 09
"Israel conducts its largest-ever defence drills to a 'doomsday scenario' of missile attacks on four directions. Is it a show of force, just a test, or really a dry-run for war? And will five days of drills reassure the Israeli public, or cause more concern about where their government is taking them?"

Treachery - May 31 09
The timing of this raid is an indication of the magnitude of this crime. Definitely aimed at the Palestinian reconciliation talks, this may succeed in digging the final nail in the unity's coffin. Abbas may now thank General Dayton for another coup against Palestine.
"Three Palestinian police officers, two Hamas fighters and a bystander have been killed in a clash in the occupied West Bank. Al Jazeera's Nour Odeh reports that keeping Hamas and Fatah - currently in talks in Egypt - from further clashes may be wishful thinking."

Israel has Locked up JABARA village since 2002 - Even the most basic health care is a luxury
"JBARA, Occupied Palestinian Territory, 26 May 2009 Nestled in a small crook of land, surrounded by the barrier between the West Bank and Israel, sits the community of Jbara, home to nearly 300 people.
Today there is a rush of activity in one of the larger houses. Posters are pinned on clotheslines and a health education session is under way in the garden.
For the first time since the barrier enclosed this community in 2002, UNICEF has been able to arrange a long-awaited visit from health workers. It builds upon work with the Ministry of Health to bring vaccinations and rudimentary care to marginalized and enclosed communities in the West Bank.
Through these visits, UNICEF aims to broaden the range of basic but life-saving child care practices and help mothers living in isolated enclaves.
Overcoming obstacles
The barrier not only separates Jbara from other villages and basic services, such as schools and health centres, but has also separated the people of nearby Tulkarem from their farmlands in Jbara.
Permits are required to enter and leave Jbara, and crossing through the military gates is often a difficult and time-consuming process. Conflict, as well as access and movement restrictions, have led to losses of jobs and rising poverty.
By 2008, half of Palestinian households were living in poverty, according to the UN Development Programme.
“The challenge remains reaching isolated communities in restricted areas,” said UNICEF Health and Nutrition Officer Samson Agbo. “Families have gotten much poorer very quickly, and children are the most susceptible to the impact of household poverty.
A sombre feeling
Earlier in the day, a team from the Ministry of Health had given out water purification tablets and talked about the importance of proper hygiene and sanitation. Lack of sanitation facilities and a functioning sewage system is a growing concern.
“The community... must discharge the untreated sewage in to the fields,” says local resident Na'da Awad. “This has increased the risk of disease and infections, as well as allergies and skin lesions.”
As the small children play together in the garden, there is a sombre feeling. “There are no recreation facilities available to the children here,” says one mother. “There is not much around to inspire them to play.”
Across the West Bank and Gaza, UNICEF is providing basic vaccines and immunization-related supplies, as well as vitamin A, vitamin D and iron supplements, as well as increasing knowledge on basic nutrition practices and strengthening health workers' capacity for infant and child care. With these interventions, UNICEF aims to raise the number of children benefiting from early childhood development, with a special emphasis on children in hard-to-reach areas such as the Jbara community.

Comment: Politicians are taught body language at an early stage in their career, no politician would ever be elected if s/he is unable to control it. Abbas cannot be trusted with Palestinian interests, Hamas says
Source: PIC
[ 29/05/2009 - 06:55 PM ]
GAZA, (PIC)-- Hamas said on Friday that nothing new has emanated from the meeting between former PA Chief Mahmoud Abbas and US President Barak Obama and that the meeting was disappointing for the Palestinian people.
"The meeting between Abu Mazen and Obama did not produce anything new, it was disappointing, especially that Abu Mazen expressed readiness to implement the road-map, which means that the PA is fully committed to security coordination with the Zionist enemy which targets the rooting out of resistance and the liquidation of Hamas and reinforces the internal Palestinian rift, as the road map was rejected by all Palestinian factions except for Abu Mazen's commitment to it," said Fawzi Barhoum, the Hamas spokesman in the Gaza Strip.
Barhoum further said that Obama's wishes are not enough, especially in the light of the continued Zionist escalations in terms of assassinations, arrests, land confiscation and siege. He stressed that Palestinian people do not attach much hope to such meetings which never produced any real pressure on the Zionist enemy to end the siege, end the building of settlements or stop the aggression.
"The result of Abu Mazen's security commitments to the occupation, including those stipulated by the road map is a police authority that works to protect the occupation at the expense of the Palestinian citizen and his rights," Barhoum explained.
He finally said that Abbas is guilty of continuing the policy of political detention, hampering the national reconciliation talks, forming illegitimate governments in Ramallah which means he has nothing to contribute towards a successful outcome of the reconciliation talks and cannot be trusted with the Palestinian interests as long as he is fully tied to American and Zionist dictates.

Bil'in: Three injured, and scores suffered gas inhalation at the weekly demonstration
Friday May 29, 2009 16:59 by Katherine Orwell - 1 of International Middle East Media Center Editorial Group
Residents of Bil'in, near the central West Bank city of Ramallah marched on Friday after midday prayer in the weekly protest. They were joined by international and Israelis activists.
Demonstrators marched through the village towards the wall waving Palestinian flags, to protest the theft and destruction of around 60 percent of the village lands.
A delegation from the general union of women committees participated in the demonstration. They were joined by a member of the Palestinian Parliament Qais Abu Laila, and the minister of social affairs Majida Al-Masri.
As the protestors arrived at the wall, they were greeted by a barrage of sound bombs, tear gas and rubber-coated bullets from the Israeli soldiers. The protestors demanded the soldiers to stop this strategy since the demonstration, involving internationals, was peaceful and nonviolent.
The soldiers, however, continued to fire upon the protestors, injuring three Palestinians: the minister of social affairs Majeda el Masri, AP camera man Abed Khabesa and local farmer Rani Burnat. In response, Palestinian demonstrators threw balloons filled with animal dung to counter the Israeli military's use of poisonous gas.
For the people of Bil'in this week's demonstration marked the 40th day commemoration of the death of Bassem Abu Rahma, a man from the village that was killed when a teargas grenade was shot at him, during another non-violent demonstration against the wall.

Despite No Links to Violence, Founders of Muslim Charity Sentenced to Lengthy Terms for Donations to Needy Palestinians in Occupied Territories
"Five founders of the Holy Land Foundation, once the nation’s
largest Muslim charity, have received prison terms of up to sixty-five years on charges of supporting the Palestinian group Hamas. The five were never accused of supporting violence and were convicted for funding charities that aided needy Palestinians. The government’s case relied on Israeli intelligence as well as disputed documents and electronic surveillance gathered by the FBI over a span of fifteen years. We speak to Noor Elashi, daughter of Ghassan Elashi, the chair of the Holy Land Foundation who was sentenced to sixty-five years; and Nancy Hollander, a defense attorney who represented former Holy Land CEO Shukri Abu Baker.
Five founders of a Muslim charity have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms in a controversial case that began nearly ten years ago. The Holy Land Foundation, based in a Dallas suburb, was the biggest Muslim charity in the United States before the Bush administration shut it down in 2001. Its five founders were convicted last November on charges of funneling money to the Palestinian group Hamas. The U.S. government declared Hamas a terrorist organization in 1995.
It was the second trial against the Holy Land foundations’s five leaders after the first ended in a mistrial. The government’s case relied on Israeli intelligence as well as disputed documents and electronic surveillance gathered by the FBI over a span of fifteen years.
Defendants Ghassan Elashi and Shukri Abu Baker each received 65-year prison sentences. At his sentencing hearing, Elashi said: “Nothing was more rewarding than…turning the charitable contributions of American Muslims into life assistance for the Palestinians. We gave the essentials of life: oil, rice, flour. The [Israeli] occupation was providing them with death and destruction.”
Another defendant, Mohammad El-Mezain, was sentenced to fifteen years in prison. He was found guilty of supporting Hamas but acquitted on thirty-one other charges. Volunteer fundraiser Mufid Abdulqader was sentenced to twenty years in prison. And the fifth defendant, Abdulrahman Odeh, was sentenced to fifteen years in prison. All five defendants plan to file appeals.
We go now to Dallas where we are join by Noor Elashi, she’s the daughter of Ghassan Elashi, the chairman of the Holy Land who was sentenced to 65 years. And joining us from her home in Albuquerque via videostream is Nancy Hollander, a defense attorney who represented former Holy Land CEO Shukri Abu Baker. We invited Jim Jacks, the lead prosecutor in the case, on the show but his office declined.

Inside Story - Israeli settlements - 25 May 09
Comment: Al Jazeera calls it a trend, but the facts show otherwise. Yes, there are a few seeking to buy homes in settlements, yet they have been trying without success. It's not only because Israeli settlers refuse to sell to Palestinians, but because some of the settlements are owned by the JNF which prohibits their selling to Palestinians [and in other cases the legal obstacles are endless]. Besides, the numbers, even of those unsuccessfuly seeking to buy, is so low compared to the number of units in the settlements themselves that you can't even consider it.
That's why I reject the sensationalism of this so called trend and call it nothing but hogwash.

Israeli soldiers on Friday attacked Palestinian and international peace activists holding the weekly non-violent protest against the Wall in Ni'lin village, west of the central West Bank city of Ramallah.
The protest marked the first year of Ni'lin's ongoing struggle against the Israeli wall and settlements being built on land that belongs to the village.
As soon as the crowd reached the lands where the army is building the wall, troops attacked them with batons, rubber-coated-steal bullets and tear gas. Eight protestors were injured and dozens were treated for the effects of gas inhalation.
Earlier the same day Israeli soldiers had invaded the village and had taken positions on roof tops of famers' homes to try to prevent the protest from leaving the village to the location of the wall.

The Governmental Committee for Breaking the Siege in the Gaza Strip reported on Friday that the European Hope Aid Convoy is expected to arrive in the Gaza Strip on Sunday morning.
The Committee, based in Gaza, reported Friday that the convoy, carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza, would dock at Bour Sa’id Port in Egypt on Friday, and then would drive towards the Rafah border terminal.
It is expected to reach the terminal on Saturday evening or Sunday morning. The committee stated that it conducted all preparations and coordinated with all related authorities to ensure that the convoy makes it into Gaza.
Hamdi Shaath, head of the Committee, issued a press release on Friday stating that visiting activists and leaders would be touring Gaza to observe the destruction caused by the Israeli offensive against the Gaza Strip, and the negative impacts of the Israeli siege on the residents.
Shaath added that the visiting delegates would also tour agricultural lands uprooted and shelled by the army, and would also visit medical facilities as the siege emptied Gaza hospitals and medical centers from basic supplies and equipment.
They would also visit some institutions that deal with rehabilitation of physically challenged residents and other rehabilitation and social centers.
Shaath said the wheelchairs and medical supplies are urgently needed in the Gaza Strip.

*Jerusalem day* in the old city of Jerusalem: 2008
To understand what's going on in this video, please read the following comments first.
"2nd of june 2008
get your own idea..."
Published Commentary on this Video:
*"The video at the YouTube link given above was filmed by an acquaintance of mine on June 2-nd, 2008, the anniversary of `1967 `reunification of Jerusalem` (read: occupation of East Jerusalem), which is officially celebrated by the State of Israel. The video shows how the right-wingers celebrate this anniversary in the narrow streets of the Old City, most of whose inhabitants are Palestinian. Among the slogans which they are chanting (in presence of police) you can hear `Mavet La`Aravim` which means `Death to Arabs`. For readers who do not know: people of this ilk are heavily subsidized by the State of Israel and are one of the tools of the ethnic cleansing policy in the West Bank."
* The Editor (VB)
**"In scenes reminiscent of what a Russian or Romanian pogrom must have been like, Israeli demonstrators in the Old City of Jerusalem marched through, chanting 'Death to the Arabs' and 'Arabs Out'.
The video at YouTube was filmed on June 2nd, 2008, the anniversary of the 1967 ‘reunification’ of Jerusalem` [read: occupation of East Jerusalem]. It is to celebrate "Jerusalem Day". And what better way to celebrate than to hold a demonstration in the Arab quarter of Jerusalem (or what is left of it).
The video shows how right-wing religious Zionists, such as the ones at Yeshiva Mercaz Harav, which was recently bombed in retaliation for their role in the settlement of the West Bank, celebrate this anniversary in the narrow streets of the Old City. Among the slogans they are chanting, in the presence of police who look on without a care in the world, is `Mavet La`Aravim` which means `Death to Arabs`. For readers who do not know, people of this ilk are heavily subsidized by the State of Israel and are one of the tools of the ethnic cleansing policy in the West Bank.
Dorothy Naor, an Israeli anti-Zionist, writes that:
‘The video won’t mean much to you if you are unfamiliar with the Old City in Jerusalem and if you don’t understand Hebrew. In both cases you will miss what the action is all about. So, let me explain. What you will see in the video is a crowd of gung-ho happy young religious idealists marching through the Arab quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem. Let me repeat, the Arab quarter. From time to time you also see Israeli police and barricades, neither of which stop the young men from progressing in their march and chanting. And what are they chanting at the beginning? "Arabs go home," meaning, Arabs get out (sound familiar? like ‘Juden raus,’ i.e., the Nazi’s ‘Jews out’? These young men indeed fit that much of the Nazi image well, except appear to be less disciplined). Following that, these nice sweet young bullies start chanting loudly in the Arab quarter (let me repeat: in the Arab quarter) of the Old City, "Death to the Arabs."
Ah yes. Brave New World. To whom will you belong?'
Contrast this with the annual demonstration of Israeli Palestinians on 'Land Day'. Then squads of Border Police, without fail attack the demonstration with gas, dogs and in the past live ammunition. Yet here we see Police nonchalantly fraternising with these racist maniacs. And that should tell you everything you need to know about the Israeli State and why it bears comparisons with the most anti-Semitic regimes of the past.

DN! Gaza War Crimes Probe to Hold Public Hearings
"Gaza War Crimes Probe to Hold Public Hearings
A United Nations commission says its facing obstacles from the Israeli government ahead of its probe of alleged war crimes during Israels three-week assault on Gaza earlier this year. The commission is probing allegations of war crimes committed by both Israeli forces and Hamas fighters. But inquiry head Richard Goldstone says his team will likely have to enter Gaza through Egypt, because Israel has refused to cooperate. Richard Goldstone: It would have been our wish to start there, to visit southern Israel, Sderot, to go into Gaza through the front door to go to the West Bank, which is also included in our mission. I made a number of approaches to the Israeli ambassador in Geneva, even a direct approach to Prime Minister Netanyahu, but weve really received no official response."

Aftermath of Latest Israeli airstrikes in Gaza
"Residents in Gaza City surveyed the damage caused by a series of overnight airstrikes by Israeli fighter jets"
Several injuries reported in a series of Israeli air strikes in Gaza
Source: IMEMC
Date: Wednesday May 20, 2009 09:02
Palestinian medical sources in the Gaza Strip reported that several residents were wounded in a series of Israeli air strikes carried out by the Israeli Air Force after midnight targeting several neighborhoods in Gaza city, Jabalia and Rafah.
The Palestine News and Information Agency (WAFA) reported that F-16 fighter-jets shelled an area near the cars market, at the Salah Ed Deen Street, east of Gaza’s Al Zeitoun neighborhood. Two residents were wounded and were moved to a local hospital.
The air force also shelled a blacksmith workshop in Al Zeitoun neighborhood, completely leveling it and causing damage to a number of nearby homes.
Shortly afterwards, the air force shelled another blacksmith shop on Yaffa street, north east of Gaza City; one resident was wounded and several homes and structures were damaged.
Furthermore, the Israeli Air Force shelled a number of areas in the town of Jabalia, in the northern part of the Gaza Strip.
Meanwhile, the Israeli Navy opened automatic fire and fired several shells at areas across the Gaza shore.
The air force also shelled a chicken farm in Rafah completely damaging it.
On Tuesday night, the air force shelled the “Tunnels Area” in Rafah, wounding one woman and one child. Both were moved to Abu Yousef Al Najjar Hospital.
The shelling came shortly after the Air Force shelled an area close to Al Barazil neighborhood, south of Rafah.
It is worth mentioning that the Israeli Navy fired several shells at areas across the coasts of Gaza and Khan Younis.
Israeli air force shells Gaza
Wed, 20 May 2009 07:03:08
Palestinian sources in the Gaza Strip reported on Tuesday evening that Israeli war jets shelled an area in Rafah, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip. No injuries were reported.
The sources said that the air force fired at least one missile at the border area, adjacent to Al Barazil neighborhood, south of Rafah.
The shelling did not cause damage or injuries, but several residents, especially children, suffered anxiety attacks due to the night shelling.
Several residents left their home for a while fearing repeated strikes.
The missile fired by the Israeli Air force did not explode, but the sounds of the war jets flying not high above the civilian areas caused panic among the residents.

Al-Masara against the Wall and Settlements 1-5-2009
"The Al-Masara Committee against the Wall and Settlements has been organizing and participating in demonstrations against the confiscation of their land for the past two and a half years. Participants and committee members are known for their strict adherence to non-violent tactics in demonstrations. While the protesters maintained their usual tactics on 1 May 2009, Israeli forces escalated their attempt to suppress the non-violent resistance by arresting several demonstrators. A new military commander, stationed in the area two months prior, had announced his intentions to end the resistance and implemented tactics such as night invasions of organizers homes, destruction of property and threats.
During the demonstration on 1 May 2009, the Israeli army arrested three members of the Al-Masara Committee against the Wall and Settlements; Hasan Bergia, Mohammad Bergia and Mahmoud Sawahre. Additionally, Israeli forces arrested Mustafa Fuara; a resident of Al-Masara, Azmi Ash-Shyukhi; a resident of Hebron, Haggai Matar; an Israeli solidarity activist and Tom Stocker, a British national volunteering with the Holy Land Trust.
The army alleged that the arrested demonstrators were involved in rioting, interfering with police work, assault of soldiers and policemen, and the destruction of military property.
The Israeli activist Matar and British volunteer Stocker, were released the same day on 1,500 NIS bail with conditions of not entering the West Bank for two weeks. Azmi Ash-Shyukhi; Mustafa Fuara; and Mahmoud Sawahre, were released on bail (50,000 NIS all together) after being held in military prison for almost two weeks on 13 May 2009.
Hassan Bergia and Mohammad Bergia, members of the Al-Masara Committee Against the Wall and Settlements, are still being held.
Mohammad Bergias lawyer will appeal for his release and letters of support can help shed light on the injustice of his arrest. Show support for Mohammad Bergia and help apply pressure for his release by signing and sending the sample letter below to haggai@hotmail.com.
Additionally, help is needed to cover the cost of the bail and defense of the Palestinian activists. Donations can be made at http://www.awalls.org/donations, with a note that the donation is meant for the al-Ma'sara Committee members."

US signals shift in ties with Israel + Netanyahu faces diplomatic test in US

Netanyahu faces diplomatic test in US - 18 May 09:
"Binyamin Netanyahu, Israel's prime minister, begins his first US visit since taking office, promoting policies that could herald a rocky relationship with President Barack Obama.
Despite warm relations between the US and Israel for decades, Netanyahu's own history with Washington has been strained.

Arson at Juhr Addik fields, Gaza Strip
Israeli troops set fire to 30 donums of agricultural fields planted with Grain, Olives and Pomegranate. Other losses (as can be seen) include irrigation pipes. Israel's siege on Gaza does not allow any plastic or PBC pipes into the strip, which means these farmers did not only lose the fruit of their fields but also the very means to plant them again. Israel's crimes are infinite!
