Bil'in weekly demo against the apartheid wall and in solidarity with jailed activists 30.10.09

bilin demo 30.10.09 by haitham a katib:

"Two injured and several demonstrators suffered from tear gas inhalation from canisters thrown at them by the Israeli occupation soldiers in their attempt to suppress the weekly protest of Bilin citizens and solidarity groups.

The demonstration was called by the Popular Committee Against the Wall and started directly after the Friday prayers. Bilin citizens were joined by a group of international and Israeli peace activists and together they raised Palestinian flags and banners condemning the occupation, racist policy of building the Wall and settlements, land confiscation, road closures and detention and killing of innocent people. Adeeb Abu Rahmah, a leading activist and organizer from the West Bank village of Bilin has been held in detention since his arrest during a demonstration on 10 July 2009 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqaO8lFYuM0).

Bilins weekly demonstration against the Wall and settlements was devoted to calling for the release of Abu Rahmah, as well as to protesting the ongoing attempts to eliminate the villages resistance. Protesters marched on Friday wearing masks of Adeeb, declaring We are all Adeeb Abu Rahmah.

Abu Rahmah, who has been detained for over three months, is not suspected of committing any violence, but was indicted with a blanket charge of 'incitement to violence', which was very liberally interpreted in this case to include the organizing of grassroots demonstrations. A judge had initially ruled that Abu Rahmah is released with restrictive conditions, but an appeal filed by the military prosecution had the decision overturned, and he was remanded until the end of legal proceedings. Since the arrest, the defense has appealed this decision four times. Trials often last up to a year and Abu Rahmah is the sole provider for a family of eleven.

Abu Rahmah's arrest came amidst an Israeli arrest and intimidation campaign that began concurrently with preliminary hearings in a Bilin lawsuit against two Canadian companies responsible for the construction in the settlement of Modiin Illit. In almost five years of protest, 75 Bil'in residents were arrested in connection to demonstrations against the Wall. Of them, 27 have been arrested in the recent, ongoing arrest campaign. Israeli forces have been regularly invading homes and forcefully searching for demonstration participants, targeting the leaders of the Popular Committee Against the Wall and Settlements, as well as teenage boys accused of stone throwing. Sixteen currently remain in detention, nine of which are minors.

On 23 June 2009, the Canadian court heard the preliminary arguments for a suit brought by Bilin against two companies registered in Canada (Green Park International & Green Mount International). The village is seeking justice against the construction of settlements on its lands under the 2000 Canadian Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Statute, which incorporates international humanitarian law into Canadian federal law. Some of the people arrested in the latest wave of arrests have reported being questioned in regards to this suit during their interrogation.

Her book weaves together the narratives of Arab-Americans from a football player in Birmingham in 1948 to a Republican (yes, Republican) campaign volunteer in 2000, creating a picture of Arab America that is far outside the stereotype perpetrated during the Bush era."

Despite Republican fearmongering, 78% of Jewish voters supported Obama, and the rise of the new, pro-peace J Street lobby, which held its first convention this week, did not happen in a vacuum. The discourse, she notes, has changed and Americans no longer wholeheartedly support militaristic policies in Israel. There is room for debate on these issues, and politicians should fear hiding from it more than they fear addressing the issues."

Israel rations Palestinians to trickle of water | Amnesty International

Israel rations Palestinians to trickle of water | Amnesty International:

" 27 October 2009
Amnesty International has accused Israel of denying Palestinians the right to access adequate water by maintaining total control over the shared water resources and pursuing discriminatory policies.

These unreasonably restrict the availability of water in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) and prevent the Palestinians developing an effective water infrastructure there.

“Israel allows the Palestinians access to only a fraction of the shared water resources, which lie mostly in the occupied West Bank, while the unlawful Israeli settlements there receive virtually unlimited supplies. In Gaza the Israeli blockade has made an already dire situation worse,” said Donatella Rovera, Amnesty International’s researcher on Israel and the OPT.

In a new extensive report, Amnesty International revealed the extent to which Israel’s discriminatory water policies and practices are denying Palestinians their right to access to water.

Israel uses more than 80 per cent of the water from the Mountain Aquifer, the main source of underground water in Israel and the OPT, while restricting Palestinian access to a mere 20 per cent.

The Mountain Aquifer is the only source for water for Palestinians in the West Bank, but only one of several for Israel, which also takes for itself all the water available from the Jordan River.

While Palestinian daily water consumption barely reaches 70 litres a day per person, Israeli daily consumption is more than 300 litres per day, four times as much.

In some rural communities Palestinians survive on barely 20 litres per day, the minimum amount recommended for domestic use in emergency situations.

Some 180,000-200,000 Palestinians living in rural communities have no access to running water and the Israeli army often prevents them from even collecting rainwater.

In contrast, Israeli settlers, who live in the West Bank in violation of international law, have intensive-irrigation farms, lush gardens and swimming pools.

Numbering about 450,000, the settlers use as much or more water than the Palestinian population of some 2.3 million.

In the Gaza Strip, 90 to 95 per cent of the water from its only water resource, the Coastal Aquifer, is contaminated and unfit for human consumption. Yet, Israel does not allow the transfer of water from the Mountain Aquifer in the West Bank to Gaza.

Stringent restrictions imposed in recent years by Israel on the entry into Gaza of material and equipment necessary for the development and repair of infrastructure have caused further deterioration of the water and sanitation situation in Gaza, which has reached crisis point.

To cope with water shortages and lack of network supplies many Palestinians have to purchase water, of often dubious quality, from mobile water tankers at a much higher price.

Others resort to water-saving measures which are detrimental to their and their families’ health and which hinder socio-economic development.

“Over more than 40 years of occupation, restrictions imposed by Israel on the Palestinians’ access to water have prevented the development of water infrastructure and facilities in the OPT, consequently denying hundreds of thousand of Palestinians the right to live a normal life, to have adequate food, housing, or health, and to economic development,” said Donatella Rovera.

Israel has appropriated large areas of the water-rich Palestinian land it occupies and barred Palestinians from accessing them.

It has also imposed a complex system of permits which the Palestinians must obtain from the Israeli army and other authorities in order to carry out water-related projects in the OPT. Applications for such permits are often rejected or subject to long delays.

Restrictions imposed by Israel on the movement of people and goods in the OPT further compound the difficulties Palestinians face when trying to carry out water and sanitation projects, or even just to distribute small quantities of water.

Water tankers are forced to take long detours to avoid Israeli military checkpoints and roads which are out of bounds to Palestinians, resulting in steep increases in the price of water.

In rural areas, Palestinian villagers are continuously struggling to find enough water for their basic needs, as the Israeli army often destroys their rainwater harvesting cisterns and confiscates their water tankers.

In comparison, irrigation sprinklers water the fields in the midday sun in nearby Israeli settlements, where much water is wasted as it evaporates before even reaching the ground.

In some Palestinian villages, because their access to water has been so severely restricted, farmers are unable to cultivate the land, or even to grow small amounts of food for their personal consumption or for animal fodder, and have thus been forced to reduce the size of their herds.

“Water is a basic need and a right, but for many Palestinians obtaining even poor-quality subsistence-level quantities of water has become a luxury that they can barely afford,” said Donatella Rovera.

“Israel must end its discriminatory policies, immediately lift all the restrictions it imposes on Palestinians’ access to water, and take responsibility for addressing the problems it created by allowing Palestinians a fair share of the shared water resources.”"

Israel's nuclear capabilities - 25 Oct 09

Israel's nuclear capabilities - 25 Oct 09:
"While Israel is one of the loudest voices calling for a tougher line on Iran's nuclear programme, its own nuclear capability has never been put to inspection.

Israel has two nuclear research centres - at Dimona and Soreq. The latest estimates suggest that Israel has produced at least 118 warheads with weapons grade plutonium.

The Jericho ballistic missiles are capable of carrying such weapons.

The Jericho One, which is now obsolete, had a range of 500 kilometres, and could carry a 20 kiloton nuclear warhead - 20 times more powerful than the US bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945.

The Jericho Two has a range of 1500 kilometres. It could just reach Iran - and is believed to be able to carry a one megaton nuclear bomb, which is 1,000 times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb.

It is believed a Jericho Three missile is now being developed - that will be able to travel around 5,000 kilometres, bringing all of Iran and Europe into its range.

Jordan's ties with Israel turn cold - 26 Oct 09

Jordan's ties with Israel turn cold - 26 Oct 09:

"Jordan and Israel mark 15 years of peace today, but ties between both countries are cooler than ever.

Since the right-wing Israeli government of Binyamin Netanyahu took office in May, Jordan has been left further disappointed with its neighbour - saying they are the ones sacrificing more than they are getting from an agreement with Israel.

It has been 15 years since Jordan became the only Arab nation, other than Egypt, to normalise ties with Israel.

Pushed by the United States the two warring nations signed the historical Wadi Arabah Peace treaty (or the Camp David peace accord) on October 26, 1994.

The treaty set a border between the two countries on the River Jordan that aimed to fully normalise diplomatic and security relations.

In 1996, the US signed an additional trade treaty allowing Jordan to export products to the US duty free if they contained inputs from Israel.

US aid to Jordan has grown more than 24 times since the signing of the treaty.

But 15 years on, the Jordanian parliament is calling for the treaty to be annulled.

Jordan's King says trade is almost non-existant and it is almost impossible for Jordanians to enter Israel.

IRTACH Checkpoint - Tulkarem District (2 Parts)

Palestinian workers at the privatized IRTACH gate:

The absolute majority of Checkpoints (over 600 checkpoints and roadblocks) lies within the West Bank itself, between Palestinian villages, towns, and cities, or even within Palestinian cities or villages themselves, controlling the movement of Palestinians and limiting their access to work, schools, health facilities etc. However, this Particular checkpoint is one of the few that are different, in the sense that it controls the movement of Palestinians between Israel and the Tulkarem District in the West Bank, although the checkpoint physically lies within the West Bank.
Israeli settlers [read: Jewish settlers] in the area do not have to go through checkpoints. They usually have other designated Israeli only roads leading them unhindered into Israel, which roads cannot be used by Palestinians (shot or detained if found on such roads.)

The first video shows workers who have a permit to work in Israel as they exit the checkpoint, but shows non of the conditions within the checkpoint itself.

It is worth mentioning that as the majority of Palestinians in the West Bank are refugees who were forcibly removed from 78% of historic Palestine, now Israel, most of these workers you see in the video are refugees returning to their historic land (pre 1948 Palestine) in the form of slave-like workers with no rights, social security benefits or even work security.

Despite such heavy repression, the demonstration continued for over an hour and a half and ended with everybody leaving together singing and clapping through the clouds of tear gas.

Women Under Occupation

Women Under Occupation:

"The Israeli occupation affects the daily lives of Palestinians, especially for women.

The deterioration of the economic, social and health conditions in Palestine is directly linked with violence inside the home. The militarization of space and restrictions imposed upon women is causing a growing crisis in violence against women.

Dr. Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian, university Professor and author of recent book Militarization and Violence Against Women in Conflict Zones in the Middle East, speaks about the ordeals of Palestinian women under occupation.

AIC also speaks with Saida Atrash Director of Mehwar Center, the only shelter for women in the West Bank of Palestine."

Citzens arrest and mass disruption of former Israeli PM Ehud Olmert in San Francisco:

"Bay Area residents attempted a citizen's arrest of former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, while he gave a speech to the World Affairs Council in San Francisco on 22 October 2009. Twenty-two people were arrested for challenging Olmert directly and demanding he be tried for war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon. Olmert has faced protests at Tulane University, University of Kentucky and the University of Chicago. The recent International Independent Fact-Finding Mission, headed by Judge Richard Goldstone, found evidence that Israel had committed war crimes and crimes against humanity during a three-week long attack on the Gaza Strip last winter, killing more than 1,400 Palestinians, mostly civilians, and destroying much of the area's infrastructure. In 2006, similar Israeli attacks on Lebanon killed 1,200 people. Olmert has refused to be held accountable."

Rani Bornat and peaceful resistance:

"The video is a portrayal of a non-violent activist and photographer from Bilin, Rani Bornat. Rani was shot by Israeli snipers during the first days of the second Intifada during a peaceful protest in Ramallah. His injuries have left him confined to an electric wheelchair with only the use of his right hand. In 2004 Israel began to construct the apartheid wall in his village, Bilin, stealing 60% of the villages land. Since then, villagers have organized weekly, and sometimes daily, non-violent demonstrations against the wall and the settlements surrounding it, making Bilin a centre of non-violent resistance in the West Bank. Rani, one of the organizers of the villages popular resistance, has attended and photographed every single demonstration, and compiled a huge archive of photographs."

UNICEF: Mia Farrow in Occupied Palestinian Territory

UNICEF: Mia Farrow in Occupied Palestinian Territory:

"NEW YORK, USA, 19 October 2009 In her first official visit to the Occupied Palestinian Territories, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Mia Farrow joined fellow Goodwill Ambassador Mahmoud Kabil to witness the impact of conflict on children.

The children appear traumatized. The teachers say that when they hear a loud noise they look to the sky and cry out and weep. They dont know what the future holds. They deserve better, Ms. Farrow said.

Nearly nine months after the end of conflict, around 20,000 residents are still displaced. Homes, vital infrastructure and 280 damaged schools still cannot be repaired. Children remain at risk of death or injury from unexploded ordnance and there are ongoing security risks. Approximately more than half of the population of Gaza does not have daily access to safe water.

The longstanding blockade on Gaza violates fundamental child rights to health, education and protection. Palestinian children have the same rights as all children everywhere and these rights need to be upheld, Mr. Kabil said.

Breaking the Thirst - Water Deprivation as a Means of Ethnic Cleansing

Breaking the Thirst:

"Breaking the Thirst
Water Deprivation as a Means of Ethnic Cleansing

In the South Hebron Hills of Palestine, 3500 Palestinians are suffering from the most extreme lack of water. They have no water infrastructure, face high water hauling costs, and must contend with Israeli soldiers and settlers destroying their road access and even poisoning their small wells.

On September 26th, 2009 some 100 activists with support from Israeli, Palestinian and international organizations formed a water convoy to deliver water as a humanitarian and political act.

Background:

In the South Hebron Hills, south of road no. 317, about 3,500 Palestinians live at present in various forms of rural localities villages, hamlets and caves. Their livelihood consists of herding sheep and goats, dry farming and olive groves. Israel eyes this region - hundreds of thousands of dunam meaning to annex it in the future and create territorial continuity all the way to the green line around Arad-En Gedi.

To realize its annexation plans, Israel wants the entire area of the South Hebron Hills clean of Palestinians, the legal owners of the land. In order to make life impossible for the residents, the authorities harass the local population in numerous different ways: administrative and court orders, house demolitions, home-cave demolitions, destruction of wells, tracks and harvests, and the declaration of vast areas as firing zones forbidden entry. The extremist Jewish settlers of the area also serve as the regimes long arm, and assault the residents with acts of severe physical violence, uprooting of fruit trees and the destruction of crops.

East of road no. 317, Palestinian localities have no water infrastructure, while the Jewish settlements in the area are regularly and amply supplied through the water pipe grid laid down by Mekorot national water company. Settlers engage in intense agriculture such as hothouse plants that consume enormous quantities of water. While some of these settlers nurture private lawns, the neighboring Palestinians sheep and goat die of thirst across the fence.

Residents of this area depend on the rainwater that fills water holes during the wet season, and water supplied by tankers costing up to 50 sheikels per one cubic meter. The quantity of water consumed per person here is estimated at 15 liters a day, a far cry from the average water consumption of Palestinians in the West Bank, about 66 liters a day, and in the Jewish settlements and Israel proper 236 liters a day per person.

According to the latest 2009 World Bank Report, West Bank Palestinians, per person, use 75 cubic meters of water per year; in Gaza, 125. Iraelis use 240.
Palestinians are only able to use 20% of the water resevoir in the West Bank.

Water controlled by Israel in the West Bank is routinely shut off to Palestinian villages and cities in the driest months."
