Palestinian children ride obstacle course to school - 30 Sep 09:
"Unco-operative donkeys and checkpoints manned by armed soldiers are not obstacles most students have to face on their way to school.
But for some Palestinian bedouin children living in the occupied West Bank, they are everyday challenges on their journey to get an education, as Al Jazeera's Clayton Swisher finds in the town of Tubas."

Bil'in night invasion 30.09.09
Bil'in night invasion 30.09.09 by haitham al katib:
"Bil'in night invasion 30.09.09
Shortly before 2am, the occupation forces invaded Bil'in once again. They raided the house of Basil Mansour Ali Mansour (age 32), a member of the Bil'in Popular Committee, in an attempt to arrest him, but he was not at home at the time.
About a dozen soldiers had entered the house when Palestinian and international activists arrived at the site. Another 15 soldiers surrounded the house preventing anyone from approaching during their search operation. They aggressively pushed the activists away from the house, declaring it a closed military area, and prohibiting any filming. They grabbed the camera of the local cameraman, Haitham Al-Khatib, damaging it.
At 3am, the occupation forces left the house without any victim and exited the village in five jeeps."

UN debates Gaza report - 29 Sep 09
UN debates Gaza report - 29 Sep 09:
"The eyes of the Arab world and beyond are focused on debate at the UN Human Rights Council and whether it will agree that alleged war crimes in Gaza warrant criminal action.
Richard Goldstone, a South African judge, led an investigation into the war on Gaza, which left more than 1,400 Palestinians dead, and his report said that there was clear evidence that crimes had been committed by both sides.
Israel has dismissed the findings as politically motivated, but many commentators have warned that the credibility of the UN body rests on its willingness to act.
Palestinians, however, simply hope that any measures taken by the council will prove to be the first step towards getting justice for the Gazans who suffered during the conflict.
Sherine Tadros reports from Gaza City."

Water convoy to besieged villages in the south Hebron hills - 26.9. 09
Water convoy To villages in the south Hebron hills - 26.9. 09:
Israel's cruel and criminal water siege on these small villages is an attempt to force the inhabitants to leave so that settlers can take over their land.
"Some 100 Israeli activists left Tel Aviv and Jerusalem to bring water to several isolated villages in the South Hebron Mount. These villages suffer more than anywhere else from Israel's racist water policy, as they lack connection to water pipes, and suffer from army attacks on what few water wells and deposits they have. Busses where harassed several times on the way, and stopped completely near the Carmel illegal settlement, where soldiers claimed the area was a closed military zone, though no warrant was shown. Activists got off the busses and started marching, passing the bewildered soldiers and policemen and moving on towards their destination. Attempts to stop the spontaneous march failed, and the hostile forces left the area.
Meeting with Palestinian partners, activists mounted water trucks and tractors and traveled the dessert until they reached a physical block on the road, put there by the army to make Palestinians' lives harder. A mass direct action, backed by a bulldozer hired for the cause, broke the road open and allowed water trucks to pass. At this point four soldiers appeared and tried to arrest the driver for the bulldozer, or at least stop it from moving. And so the activists split, leaving a small group to safe guard the bulldozer and allowing the majority to move on to the final destination.
It took the small group that stayed back two hours to convince the soldiers to leave and to secure the safe return of the bulldozer and its owner to their home. Meanwhile, the main group reached the destined villages and transferred eight trucks full of water to local residents. Four army vehicles showed up too late to stop the action, and though declaring the area a closed military zone (this time with a warrant) - could not really do anything to the activists.
With the road open, the water at its rightful place and with no arrests or wounded - the action was declared a success.

The Rise of Israel's Military Rabbis (2 Parts)
BBC Newsnight: The Rise of Israel's Military Rabbis (Part 1 of 2):
"September 7, 2009 on BBC Newsnight:
Israel's army is changing. Once proudly secular, its combat units are now filling with those who believe Israel's wars are 'God's wars'.
Military rabbis are becoming more powerful. Trained in warfare as well as religion, new army regulations mean they are now part of a military elite.
They graduate from officer's school and operate closely with military commanders. One of their main duties is to boost soldiers' morale and drive, even on the front line.
Israeli general warns of dangers of turning war into 'jihad'
This has caused quite some controversy in Israel. Should military motivation come from men of God, or from a belief in the state of Israel and keeping it safe?

Riz Khan interviews UNRWA Commissioner-General Karen AbuZayd
Riz Khan- The question of Palestinian refugees-22 Sep 09-Pt1:
"On Tuesday, U.S. President Barack Obama will meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to jump-start the Mideast peace process. It remains to be seen whether this will be a substantive meeting or a photo opportunity, but one thing is clear: the question of what to do with the millions of Palestinian refugees is still on the backburner.
The refugees have been demanding to return to their original homes in what is now Israel for the past 61 years, but Tel Aviv insists that will never happen, because it would mean the end of the Jewish majority in the country.
In the meantime, the 58 refugee camps spread throughout the region are constant reminders that the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is far from resolved.
In New York for a special series of programmes as world leaders gather for the UN general assembly Riz talks to the head of the UN agency in charge of Palestinian refugees, UNRWA Commissioner-General Karen AbuZayd."

IAEA demands that Israel open nuclear facility to inspection

The International Atomic Energy Agency passed a resolution Thursday calling on the state of Israel to open its nuclear facility in Dimona to international inspection, and to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. This is the first time in 18 years that such a resolution has managed to pass the IAEA General Assembly, as it has been blocked in previous years by Israel and the US.
Although Israel's nuclear program was exposed in the early 1980s by Mordechai Vanunu (who was jailed for two decades and remains under house arrest in Israel), the Israeli government has taken pains to avoid admitting publicly that it has nuclear weapons.
The resolution, passed by a majority 49 nations, called for the inspection of "Israeli nuclear capabilities". 45 nations, including the European Union countries and the United States, voted against the resolution.
Another resolution passed at the Assembly called for a "nuclear-free Middle East", and called for negotiations by the countries in the Middle East to achieve that end.
The Israeli representative (who is also deputy chief of the Israel Atomic Energy Commission), David Danieli, discounted the importance of this resolution, saying that Iran, Syria, Libya and Iraq had previously disregarded the Non-Proliferation Treaty that they had signed. Danieli offered no evidence to back his claim that any of those four countries had developed nuclear capabilities -- a claim that goes against the IAEA's own findings.

Establishment media love to keep issues cleanly split. Environment and health over here; war and drought over there. But reality's much more integrated. Take this news from The International Committee of the Red Cross. The people of Gaza's access to a safe supply of drinking water could cease at any time says the ICRC and the World Health Organization (WHO) says outbreaks of a variety of diseases could be triggered as a consequence. The warnings follow a United Nations report last week that Gaza's underground water system is in danger of collapse after last winters' bombardment and years of overuse and contamination." Already the WHO's seen an increase in people suffering kidney disease from dirty water. And that situation's likely to worsen. Along with the rest of the strip's infrastructure Gaza's sole underwater aquifer sustained major damage - during Israel's bombardment-- and cost of repair is estimated at 6 million dollars -- just for the water -- the sole source of water for the strip's 1.5 million people. Not so ironically, Israel's code name for the winter bombing was Operation Cast Lead. Now lead is in short supply, for repairing of pipes, but heavy metals, like other toxins, are seeping into the only water supply . Only 5-10 percent of the water now is judged fit for human consumption. Think you can save the planet stop global warming, and not stop war? Think again. There's no such thing as an environmentally healthy bombing. Not in Gaza, nor in Iraq, nor in Afghanistan.

UNRWA might be facing problems in paying the salaries
MaximsNewsNetwork: UNITED NATIONS RELIEF AND WORKS AGENCY FOR PALESTINE REFUGEES (UNRWA):
"MaximsNewsNetwork: 18 September 2009 - UNRWA: Karen Koning AbuZayd, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) tells reporters that her agency might be facing problems in paying the salaries of the twenty nine thousand staff who carry out all the human developments activities.'
Karen Koning AbuZayd, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) told reporters today (18 September) at the United Nations, while launching a report on the sixty years of UNRWA, that her agency was facing problems in paying the salaries of the twenty nine thousand staff who carry out all UNRWAs human development actions.
AbuZayd said the funding problems were more serious this year perhaps than ever, mainly because it was affecting the general funding of the basic programs that UNRWA carries out in basic primary education, primary health care, social services and micro-finance programs for refugees.
She said that the target budget for the rest of the year was about seventy million dollars, and that around thirty-two million dollars were spent in running costs, and most of that was staff salaries.
Commenting on the report presented by Judge Richard Goldstone on Tuesday on the recent Gaza conflict, AbuZayd said that she was glad that the finding concluded that there were no militants in the UNRWA schools, as we had certainly been saying all along. She added that her agency was waiting for the report to be officially presented at the Human Rights Council.
The head of UNRWA also said she was a little more hopeful this year about the future of Palestinian refugees because of the stronger lead the United States administration had taken to approach the Palestinian-Israeli issue.

DN! UN Body Urges Israel to Allow Nuclear Inspections:
"UN Body Urges Israel to Allow Nuclear Inspections
Overriding Western objections, a United Nations nuclear conference passed a resolution Friday directly criticizing Israel and its secret nuclear weapons arsenal. The UN body voted to urge Israel to accede to the Non-Proliferation Treaty and place all Israeli nuclear sites under UN inspections. The resolution cited concern about the threat posed by the proliferation of nuclear weapons for the security and stability of the Middle East. Israeli delegate David Danieli denounced the vote as openly hostile to the state of Israel and accused Iran and Syria of creating a diplomatic smoke screen to cover up their pursuit of nuclear weapons. David Danieli: The delegation of Israel deplores this resolution, which serves no purpose of the IAEA and its general conference. The state of Israel will not cooperate in any matter with this resolution, which is only aiming at reinforcing political hostilities and division lines in the Middle East region.'
Iranian delegate Ali Asghar Soltanieh praised the UN vote. Ali Asghar Soltanieh: This is a very good news and a triumph of the oppressed nation of Palestine, that their voice was heard in the international community, in the IAEA, and action was made to let them know that they are not left alone, homeless, bombarded by Israelis, and being deprived from any basic rights.
The UN meeting also adopted a resolution last week calling for a Mideast free of nuclear weapons in a near-consensus vote. Israel was the only nation to vote against the measure."

Bil'in night raid 21.09.09
bilin night raid 21.09.09 by haitham al katib:
"Bil'in night raid 21/09/09
Israeli forces invaded Bil'in once again just before 1am. Six jeeps entered the village via the gate in the occupation wall. Two jeeps stopped at the house of Mohammed Ahmed Yasseen (age 21) and searched for him in the ground floor apartment belonging to his mother. Four jeeps stopped at Abdullah Mahmoud Aburahma's (age 37) house and searched for him there. Two of these jeeps left quickly to search for Yasseen Mohammed Yasseen (age 21) at his home. None of the men were at home and no-one was arrested.
International and Israeli activists accompanied local Palestinians at all three locations to protest against the invasions and to document events. The house searches were relatively short-lived, compared to the numerous previous invasions. The soldiers delivered letters to all three families demanding that the three men go to Ofer prison to meet 'Captain Fo'ad' of the shabak. This was the first time such a demand was written in Arabic.
The invading forces were particularly aggressive at Abdullah Mahmoud Aburahma's house. They fired tear gas and shot live ammunition in the air as they exited the village a little before 2am. No-one was injured or arrested.
There has been speculation that an Israeli lawyer is attempting to show that this long series of night arrests is illegal because no forewarning was given to any of the Palestinians so far seized and detained. These letters may be an attempt by the Israeli army to pre-empt a court order demanding a warning before any arrest."

"Bil'in demo 18.09.09
Today's weekly demonstration in Bil'in was briefer than usual. The day marks a holiday both in the Muslim and Jewish calendar. Muslims are celebrating the end of the Holy month of Ramadan (Eid-ul-Fitr*), and the Jewish are celebrating New Year's Eve tonight.
There was little soldier presence today. After a multiple shot of tear gas and some follow-ups, the Palestinian protesters announced that the demonstration should end because they did not want any problems today and wished to return home early due to the holidays. It ended without any incidents or arrests.
Although the turnout today was smaller than usual, it was important to show that the resistance against the military occupation is continuing in Bil'in."

Praying for Al-Aqsa access- 18 Sept 09:
"Al-Aqsa mosque in the Old City of Jerusalem is considered the third holiest site in Islam.
During the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, thousands of worshippers make their way there to pray in the space where Muslims believe the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven.
But for many Palestinians living in the occupied territories, visiting the seventh century mosque is impossible due to Israeli-imposed travel restrictions.
Al Jazeera's Jacky Rowland reports on how others arrive at the site after taking considerable risks to make the journey - defying Israeli restrictions and sneaking under the separation barrier."

Israel to gain from altered US missile plan - 18 Sep 09
Israel to gain from altered US missile plan - 18 Sep 09:
"Analysts say one country which clearly stands to benefit from Washington's decision to alter its missile shield plan in Europe is Israel.
The new proposed Aegis system is designed to work together with Israel's own missile shield system called Arrow and having Aegis equipped ships in the Mediterranean can only be good for Israel.
The Pentagon says Israel's security was not the main reason for the change in plans, but it certainly will give Israel added protection against any potential Iranian threat.
Patty Culhane reports."

Inside Story-the issue of Israeli settlement - 16 Sep 09
Inside Story-the issue of Israeli settlement - 16 Sep 09:
"Despite a wave of protests and talks on the issue Israeli settlement construction continues.
George Mitchell, the US envoy to the Middle East, met Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister during his latest tour of the region and allthough the meeting was described as 'good' by the prime minister's office, there was no deal on the thorny issue of settlements.
The US wants Israel to temporarily halt its expansion into Palestinian land, especially in the occupied West Bank.
Mitchell and Netanyahu are set to meet again and the special envoy wants to secure an agreement ahead of possible three-way talks between Netanyahu, Barack Obama, the US president and, Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president.
So, where does that leave President Obama's peace initiative? And is the US willing to force its ally to compromise?
Inside Story, with presenter Shiulie Gosh, discusses with guests Raanan Gissen, the former senior advisor to Ariel Sharon, Michael Hudson, a professor of International Relations at Georgetown University and, Azzam Tamimi, the director of the Institute of Islamic Political Thought."

UN Inquiry Finds Israel "Punished and Terrorized" Palestinian Civilians, Committed War Crimes During Gaza Assault
UN Inquiry Finds Israel "Punished and Terrorized" Palestinian Civilians, Committed War Crimes During Gaza Assault:
"A United Nations fact-finding mission has found Israel “punished and terrorized” civilians in its three-week assault on Gaza earlier this year and cited strong evidence that Israeli forces committed “grave breaches” of the Geneva Conventions. More than 1,400 Palestinians—about a third of them women and children—were killed in the assault. We get analysis from author and Israel-Palestine scholar Norman Finkelstein."

Bil'in night raid, some injuries 16.09.09
bilin night raid, some injuries 16.09.09 by haitham al katib:
"Bil'in night raid, some injuries 16.09.09
Shortly after 1:30am, Israeli forces invaded Bil'in again. They raided the house of Abdullah Mahmoud Aburahma in an attempt to arrest him. However, he was not home at the time. Palestinian and international activists intervened by jumping over the wall into the garden since the soldiers had shut the gate closed. Some international activists were threatened with arrest unless they move back. The soldiers had sealed off the house while operating inside. They forced open two doors breaking the locks and destroying the doors. They trashed several rooms and beat Mohammed Khatib who had come to the rescue of Abdullah's family. He was taken to hospital in Ramallah for treatment and returned to the village later.
Military reinforcement arrived in five Jeeps. Outside the house, one Palestinian activist, Emad Burnat, who was filming, was pushed to the ground. One soldier also broke his camera. Hamde Aburahma and other Palestinian journalists were threatened with arrest unless they stop filming. They hit Ashraf Aburahma, another activist, with the gun injuring his right hand.
The house of Abdullah's brother, Khaled Aburahma, was raided as well, which traumatized his children that were pulled brutally out of their sleep. The invading forces said that until they find Abdullah, the entire neighborhood was theirs. They searched every room and trashed one room downstairs next to the store. They stole Palestinian flags, banners and posters used during demonstrations, and then left the house.
The invading forces exited the village around 3am without any victims.
Abdullah Aburahma called all the Human Rights organizations worldwide to help stopping the night raids in Bil'in, and to support the demonstrations against the occupation which is a legal activity."

Israel's degrading treatment of Female Palestinian Political Prisoners
Israeli guards 'humiliated inmates'- 16 Sept 09:
"A group of female former Palestinian prisoners detained in Israeli jails have accused prison guards of carrying out 'humiliating' internal body searches in violation of Israel's prison code.
In an exclusive report, former detainee Sabreen Abu Amara told Al Jazeera's Nour Odeh that she spent six years living in fear of intrusive and degrading treatment at the hands of Israeli guards.
Abu Amara said the guards strip-searched female prisoners, sometimes forcing them to squat and undergo a thorough internal examination.
One lawyer is now collecting evidence from 10 female prisoners who say they were strip-searched in an effort to lodge an official complaint."

"International pressure is mounting on Israel to end the occupation. More than 1,000 filmmakers, actors, and writers recently called for a protest of the Toronto Film Festival?s spotlight on Tel-Aviv. You can read the Toronto Declaration here. Meanwhile an international boycott is growing. Neve Gordon, in a recent editorial, explains why it is time to boycott Israel. Since then he has received harsh criticism from within Israel but also a great deal of support. He says that The Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctionscampaign is the only way to save Israel from itself. Launched by Palestinian activists in 2005 the BDS movement has now become a global effort. Diana Buttu, a former spokesperson for the Palestine Liberation Organization, Gordon, a senior lecturer at Ben-Gurion Univesity and the author of Israel's Occupation, and Phyllis Bennis, Director of the New Internationalism Project at the Institute for Policy Studies on organizing to end the occupation. "A United Nations report on Israel's war on Gaza says war crimes were committed by both sides in the conflict.
But most of the criticism was directed at Israel's conduct. Richard Goldstone, the judge leading the investigation, said Israel had used excessive force and deliberately targeted Palestinian civilians.
On behalf of the UN's Human Rights Council, the investigators collected evidence, testimonies and even satellite imagery to get an idea of whether Israel or Palestinian factions were in breach of international humanitarian law.

Israelis and Palestinians Protest Together Against Settlements
Source: Palestine Monitor
14 September 2009
Hundreds of demonstrators, both Israeli and Palestinian, gathered to protest in front of Jaffa Gate in Jeruslalem last Thursday.
The protest, with its keynote ''Give Peace A Chance: No To The Settlements In East Jerusalem'' was called by various human rights groups, including Rabbis for Human Rights, Gush Shalom, Coalition of Women for Peace, Combatants for Peace and the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions.
It was a demonstration against expanding Israeli settlements, and called on the Israeli government to end its policy of Judaizing East Jerusalem and to respect the rights of Palestinian residents. It took place exactly on the Green Line, which divides the city of Jerusalem in half.
Protesters were holding emblems of two flags, Palestinian and Israeli together, and posters saying ''Jerusalem – a city of all its inhabitants''. The protest was accompanied by songs and a group of drummers. In between speakers they interjected with drum rolls and chanting of "A city for all! A city for all!". During the demonstration large group of religious Jewish teenagers, supporting settlers, tried to disturb the event by singing and dancing, although since nobody was concerned by their provocations, they went away.
The representatives of Palestinian families expelled from their houses in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood were also present, calling on the Jewish public to act for justice and reconciliation between the two communities in Jerusalem.
One of the speakers, Orly Noy of the Ir Amim organization said "Sometimes the media coverage of settler activity in East Jerusalem gives the impression of rampaging nationalist-religious fanatics which the authorities are somehow unable to control. The reality is far from that. The state and municipal authorities, the government ministries, the officials, the jurists, the police, are all directly and actively involved in a ceaseless campaign to get as many houses and as much land out of Palestinian hands, to let settlers become established by all kinds of shady legal tricks, to let them keep possession, protected by police and a private army of security guards paid by the state, to give into their hands enormous public properties such as the so-called ‘City of David National Park' in Silwan Village. It is not private enterprise, it is very much a state enterprise run by the government of Israel".
According to Ir Amim, at the start of 2009 approximately 2000 Israeli settlers were living in Palestinian neighborhoods of East Jerusalem. In the first half of 2009, plans were being advanced for the building of an additional 150 housing units that could settle another 750 people in strategic areas of occupied Palestinian East Jerusalem. In addition, plans were advanced for Jewish community facilities (e.g., synagogues, community centers, ritual baths, etc.) in these areas.
