As the 2010 Pulitzer Prize winners are announced, we speak with the first African American woman to be awarded a Pulitzer Prize for fiction: author, poet and activist Alice Walker. She was awarded the 1983 Pulitzer for her novel The Color Purple. She was written many books since then. Her latest, just out, is called Overcoming Speechlessness: A Poet Encounters the Horror in Rwanda, Eastern Congo and Palestine/Israel.

The first two videos were filmed in Al Arish, Egypt, the third was filmed in Gaza after Alice Walker experienced the destruction and met the people.
"Alice Walker being interviewed by Anjali Kamat of Democracy Now in Al Arish, Egypt and Gaza, Palestine. After the 22 day Israeli assault on the people of Gaza, in which hundreds were killed and maimed and thousands of homes, buildings, schools, factories, libraries and hospitals were destroyed, and white phosphorous bombs were dropped on an imprisoned population, Walker joined a delegation organized by CODEPINK which took gifts and humanitarian support to the women of Gaza on International Womens Day, March 8, 2009. The Siege of Gaza, imposed and enforced by the Israeli government, with the tax dollars of average hardworking and peaceful Americans, is one of the most atrocious of the crimes against humanity now on-going in the world.
Alice asks that you not take her word for this, or for anything, but to study the situation and, if possible, go see for yourself. CODEPINK is staying with our sisters and their families in Palestine and will be taking many delegations in the next few months. It is an experience, of seeing what our money actually buys in the world, that one is not likely ever to forget."
