GRITtv: Marching for Freedom for Gaza
On the anniversary of the "Operation Cast Lead" assault on Gaza, almost 1400 people from 43 countries converged in Egypt to march to Gaza, demanding an end to the siege there. Since the actual attacks ended, the people of Gaza have been cut off from the rest of the world, and this unprecedented action, as well as solidarity movements around the globe, was designed to raise international awareness of the plight of the Gazan people. Ali Abunimah, cofounder of Electronic Intifada, and Medea Benjamin, cofounder of Code Pink: Women for Peace, took part in the march in Egypt. They join us to discuss the march, and we also speak to Electronic Intifada contributor Rami Almeghari, who is living and working in the Gaza strip.

DN! Gaza Freedom March Planned for One-Year Anniversary of Israeli Assault
"This weekend marks that one-year anniversary of the start of Israel’s three-week assault on the Gaza Strip that killed some 1,400 Palestinians and thirteen Israelis. To mark the occasion, a group of over nearly 1,400 individuals from over forty countries around the world are aiming to break the siege of Gaza and participate in a nonviolent march inside Gaza alongside thousands of Palestinians. We speak with Hedy Epstein, an eighty-five-year-old Holocaust survivor who is taking part in the march, and Medea Benjamin, co-founder of CODEPINK and part of the coordinating committee of the Gaza Freedom March."
This weekend marks that one-year anniversary of the start of Israel’s 3-week assault on the Gaza Strip that killed some 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis. One year later, little to no rebuilding has taken place and Israel’s illegal siege of Gaza continues. Since the end of its assault, Israel has only allowed 41 truckloads of construction materials into Gaza. A new report by leading humanitarian and human rights groups says thousands of truckloads are required to repair the thousands of buildings destroyed by Israel’s military assault on Gaza. The report accuses the international community of not doing enough to end Israel’s blockade and of betraying the nearly 1.5 million Palestinians living in the Gaza strip.
Next week a group of over nearly 1,400 individuals from over 40 countries around the world are aiming to break the siege of Gaza and participate in a non-violent march inside Gaza alongside thousands of Palestinians. It’s dubbed the Gaza Freedom March and we’re joined now by one of the many Americans on this march. Hedy Epstein is an 85-year old Holocaust survivor who was born in Germany. She’s also a committed anti-Zionist activist and has made five solidarity trips to the West Bank. Hedy Epstein joins us now from St. Louis, Missouri.
Earlier this week Egypt threatened to block the Gaza Freedom March from crossing into Gaza from Egypt. For the latest on this we’re joined on the line from Cairo by Medea Benjamin, the co-founder of Codepink, and part of the co-ordinating committee of the Gaza Freedom March.

Report on Canadian Parliamentary Delegation to Palestine

MPs release report on humanitarian delegation to Gaza and West Bank | rabble.ca:
From August 7 to August 14, 2009 a delegation of Canadian Members of Parliament traveled on humanitarian fact-finding mission to Jordan, the West Bank and Gaza. This week, they presented their report and recommendations to Parliament at a Press Conference on the Hill.
The delegation consisted of Liberal MP Borys Wrzesnewskyj, Bloc Quebecois MP Richard Nadeau, and NDP MP Libby Davies. The report outlines the MPs' findings and observations - which included visits to the still devastated Northern region of Gaza, to refugee camps, as well as a rare visit to the illegal tunnels - and outlines seven recommendations for Parliament and Parliamentarians to consider.
The report can be downloaded in English here and in French here.
While the MPs visited Jordan and the West Bank with the organizational assistance of Canadian Foreign Affairs, they took the unusual decision to enter and spend a night in Gaza without the support of the Canadian government. While elected representatives from the U.S., Europe and other countries have visited Gaza over the past several months, the Canadian government refused to facilitate entry to Gaza for these MPs. Instead, the MPs, who traveled to Gaza at the invitation of UNRWA, took up the offer of assistance from the peace organization Code Pink, and traveled from the West Bank to Gaza via a 24 hour+ trek that took them through Jordan, Cairo and the Sinai to Rafah border.
These Canadian MPs were not only the first to visit Gaza since the area was devastated by Israel's "Operation Cast Lead", but are reported to be the first Parliamentary delegation to visit Gaza since Prime Minister Jean Chretien visited in 2003.
See a sampling of photos of the delegation on Richard Nadeau's (MP Gatineau) website.

Rep. Howard Berman Confronted Over Goldstone Report
"On Nov. 3, 2009, on Capitol Hill, activists from the 'Coalition for Free Gaza March,' personally confronted Rep. Howard Berman (D-CA,) just outside his office over the Goldstone Report. The Congressman then quickly rushed towards his private elevator. Afterwards, six activists strolled into Room 2221, Rep. Bermans office, in the Rayburn Building, around 10 AM. There, they began reading the 575-paged UN Report of Judge Richard Goldstone. The Goldstone-authored document is highly critical of Israel's recent military conduct in Gaza, labeling some of its action as 'War Crimes.' Rep. Berman, who is Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, has introduced HR 867 in the House. Its purpose is to reject the report of the distinguished jurist, without giving Judge Goldstone a chance to personally testify before the Congress on his findings. HR 867 is due for a vote in the House later today. See, http://codepinkalert.org/article.php?... and

Israeli arrests of Palestinian human rights activists aim at stopping grassroots activism and the global call for Israeli accountability in front of international courts and through boycott, divestment and sanction (BDS) campaigns. We therefore call on all people all over the world to let Israel know: 'If you want to arrest the BDS movement, you have to catch us all!'"

CodePink Protest Products Made in Occupied Territories
"On Saturday, at noon, on Sept. 19, 2009, activists from CodePink, a women-initiated Peace and Justice Movement, staged a protest action inside of and also in front of an upscale shop located in Union Station, in Washington, DC. The store, according to CodePink, carries products of Ahava, 'Ahava Dead Sea Laboratories,' an Israeli company. CodePink charged in its press release, that it is time 'to expose the dirty truth' about Ahavas products, which are made in the 'Occupied West Bank,' and which also 'exploit occupied natural resources' in their production. The Amtrak police were eventually called to the scene and the protesters were told to exit the property. Report From Gaza - Q&A
"On July 14, 2009 200 people gathered at the Brecht Forum in New York City to hear members of the Code Pink June delegation to Gaza report on what they had seen and heard. Questions to the panel included: what the people of Gaza are asking from the people of the U.S.; whether enlightened public opinion is shifting to more recogntion of the legitimacy of the aspirations of the Palestinians; the role of the Jewish community in the U.S. in opposing Israel's agenda for the Palestinians. And whether it is possible for growing numbers of the Jewish community to support Palestinian rights and oppose the occupation. One woman mentioned the courage of those Israelis who have stood against their government's brutal and illegal treatment of the Palestinians and its fostering of hatred and fear of Arabs. Another called to openly confront the contradiction that throughout hisotry we have all been fighting anti-semitism, 'now we mustt fight the semitism.' How do you deal with the fact that the Jews who have been persecuted all their lives suddenly become the peersecuted?
Others spoke to the need to accelerate activity in support of the people of Gaza. This included growing support for a Boycott-Disinvestment-Sactions campaign and the building of a massive march in December 2009, in Gaza, of thousands of people from the U.S. in opposition to Israel's blockade and siege.
Norman Finkelstin described Israel as a marauding state and compared what it had done in south Lebanon in 2006 to what they did in Gaza in 2009.turning people's homes and neighborhoods into rubble. But, he said, there are no grounds for despair or hopelessness. "We have the truth on our side; we have the facts on our side; we have justice on our side; and finally we have mainstream enlighteed opinion on our side. With those weapons and our own energy, conscientiousness, and just a tiny little bit of backbone, with those weapons, I say, we can win."
