GRITtv: Phyllis Bennis: Israel Discourse has Changed
GRITtv: Phyllis Bennis: Israel Discourse has Changed:
"Phyllis Bennis of the Institute for Policy Studies and the Transnational Institute wants politicians, particularly President Obama, to know that criticizing Israel is no longer political suicide. Despite Republican fearmongering, 78% of Jewish voters supported Obama, and the rise of the new, pro-peace J Street lobby, which held its first convention this week, did not happen in a vacuum. The discourse, she notes, has changed and Americans no longer wholeheartedly support militaristic policies in Israel. There is room for debate on these issues, and politicians should fear hiding from it more than they fear addressing the issues."

GRITtv: Boycotting Israel (Phyllis Bennis, Diana Buttu, Neve Gordon)
GRITtv: Boycotting Israel:
"International pressure is mounting on Israel to end the occupation. More than 1,000 filmmakers, actors, and writers recently called for a protest of the Toronto Film Festival?s spotlight on Tel-Aviv. You can read the Toronto Declaration here. Meanwhile an international boycott is growing. Neve Gordon, in a recent editorial, explains why it is time to boycott Israel. Since then he has received harsh criticism from within Israel but also a great deal of support. He says that The Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctionscampaign is the only way to save Israel from itself. Launched by Palestinian activists in 2005 the BDS movement has now become a global effort. Diana Buttu, a former spokesperson for the Palestine Liberation Organization, Gordon, a senior lecturer at Ben-Gurion Univesity and the author of Israel's Occupation, and Phyllis Bennis, Director of the New Internationalism Project at the Institute for Policy Studies on organizing to end the occupation. To find out more about what you can do visit endtheoccupation.org."

"Author and fellow of the Institute for Policy Studies, Phyllis Bennis speaking at an event in Grand Rapids, Michigan on March 13, 2009. IPS fellow Phyllis Bennis is also a fellow of the Transnational Institute in Amsterdam. She has been a writer, analyst and activist on Middle East and UN issues for many years. While working as a journalist at the United Nations during the run-up to the 1990-91 Gulf War, she began working on U.S. domination of the UN, and stayed involved in work on Iraq sanctions and disarmament, and later U.S. war and occupation in Iraq. In 1999 Phyllis accompanied a group of congressional aides to Iraq to examine the impact of U.S.-led economic sanctions on humanitarian conditions there, and later joined former UN Assistant Secretary General Denis Halliday, who resigned his position as Humanitarian Coordinator in Iraq to protest the impact of sanctions, in a speaking tour. In 2001 she helped found and currently co-chairs the U.S. Campaign to End Israeli Occupation. The Siege of Gaza - Rev. Edwin Makue & Phyllis Bennis on GRITtv with Laura Flanders
GRITtv with Laura Flanders » The Siege of Gaza:
This interview was broadcast Wednesday November 26, 2008 2:00 pm
"Rev. Edwin Makue, General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches and Phyllis Bennis, Director of the New Internationalism Project at the Institute for Policy Studies on the Israeli siege of Gaza.
Since the blockade began in 2006 it has become increasingly difficult for journalists and foreign aid workers to reach Gaza. According to Makue, who is on a speaking tour with the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, there are many similarities in Israel's occupation and South African Apartheid. The controlled movement of people through check points and a strong Israeli police presence, the ongoing process of land alienation, and the psychological damage of a sixty year occupation have been labeled a form of Apartheid by many, including former US President Jimmy Carter.
So why has it been so difficult to draw attention to and dismantle the Israeli occupation? According to Bennis, fear of being labeled an anti-semite and the equation of criticism of Israel with anti-semitism have made it an increasingly hostile environment for peace activists and critics of Israeli policy. Will that change under an Obama administration? Bennis says only if we the people make it happen."

Phyllis Bennis: Darkness in Gaza - GRITtv with Laura Flanders
GRITtv with Laura Flanders » Phyllis Bennis: Darkness in Gaza: "According to a report in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, Israeli Defense Forces were instructed to prepare for an aerial assault and ground invasion of Gaza six months ago, even as they were negotiating a ceasefire.
The story begins: 'Long-term preparation, careful gathering of information, secret discussions, operational deception and the misleading of the public - all these stood behind the Israel Defense Forces 'Cast Lead' operation against Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip, which began Saturday morning.'
Phyllis Bennis, director of The New Internationalism Project at the Institute for Policy Studies and the author of many books including Understanding the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict: A Primer, says that this fact alone belies Israel's claim that the war in Gaza is a direct response to Hamas rocket fire. Bennis says that the war has much more to do with Israeli and US politics than with stopping Hamas rockets and that their hope is to finish the operation by the time Barack Obama is inaugurated. President elect Obama finally broke his silence yesterday deploring the loss of civilian life in Gaza and Israel. He said that, 'starting at the beginning of our administration, we’re going to engage effectively and consistently in trying to resolve the conflict in the Middle East.'
Bennis also argues that numerous violations of international law have occurred. One, the prohibition against collective punishment. The Geneva Conventions state that no member of an occupied population may be punished for an act they were not responsible for. Hamas rocket fire, which up until the invasion had killed zero Israelis, does not give Israel the right to punish the 1.5 million people of Gaza--half of whom are under the age of 14. Two, the prohibition against disproportionate attacks. Thus far over 600 Palestinians have been killed, at least 195 of them children. Seven Israeli soldiers have died in fighting. Three, the targeting of civilians is also a violation of international law.
So the international community has an obligation to bring an end to the war and suffering in Gaza."
