Taayush activists visit al Araqib in solidarity with the villagers who are facing the ethnic cleansing plans of the fascist Israel government. The activists brought olive trees (which symbolize steadfast on the land) to be planted in the village instead of ones uprooted in the demolitions. Read about the 21st destruction of the village by the Israeli forces below the video. For older videos and news on the destruction of the village, click the tag at the bottom of the video.

Israeli forces demolished the little that remains of the Bedouin village of El Araqib on Monday, as they work to permanently change facts on the ground, erasing the village’s very existence and history.
Four huts being used for community meetings in the village of El Araqib were destroyed by the Israeli military and the Jewish National Fund on Monday (7/3). This is the 21st demolition of the village since July 2010.
The Bedouin villagers have stopped rebuilding their homes and tents and are now living in makeshift structures in the village cemetery, adjacent to the property they once used as home. It seems that four tents are still too many, because Israeli forces joined by JNF bulldozers entered the village early Monday morning, destroyed the structures completely, and continued working on the land, which will be used for the planting of a “peace forest.”
When the demolitions first began, the Israeli authorities would destroy the homes of El Araqib, and residents and volunteers would immediately rebuild. This pattern was repeated numerous times.
However, most recently, the authorities are not only destroying homes, but also removing the building material remains so they cannot be reconstructed. They are leaving nothing behind that may evidence the site of their future forest was once was a Bedouin village for the better part of a century.
The JNF is not only planting trees at present, they are turning all of the soil in the area so that the land appears to be only agricultural.
Many residents of El Araqib are now sleeping in the nearby Bedouin city of Rahat, and returning to the village for the weekends.
Most recently, Israel’s State Attorney’s Office announced they are currently preparing a legal petition for more than NIS 1 million against El Araqib, which will require that residents cover the costs incurred to evict them and demolish their village.
The many demolitions of El Araqib are part of the aggressive attempts of the Jewish National Fund (JNF) and Israel Land Authority (ILA) attempt to claim the historic Bedouin land, erase the evidence of their century of habitation, and use it for forestation and future Jewish settlement.
During this process, thousands of fruit trees cultivated by the residents of El Araqib have been uprooted by the demolitions.
The El Araqib Committee, the El Araqib Popular Committee and the Recognition Forum, amongst others, are initiating a day of solidarity and replanting in El Araqib on Saturday 12 March. Palestinian, Israeli and international activists will be joining residents of the village to replant these uprooted fruit trees as a symbol and permanent evidence of El Araqib and the residents returning to their land.
The Recognition Forum, a coalition of groups working for official Israeli recognition of the Bedouin villages in the Naqab (Negev), is soliciting donations for the purchase of these olive tree saplings, each of which costs NIS 25. Contributions may be sent to Recognition Forum, POB 1335, Kfar Saba, 44113.
Organised transportation from Tel Aviv and Jerusalem is being organized, additional information at: aic (at) alt-info (dot) org.

Protest El Araqib Demolition:
"aicvideo | February 02, 2011
200 Palestinians and Israelis attended a protest on Tuesday 1 February at the Jewish National Fund (JNF) office in Jerusalem against Israel's 12 demolitions of the El Araqib village since last summer. The JNF is planning to plant a 'peace forest' on the El Araqib resident's land, thus uprooting people in order to plant trees. This is part of a wider Israeli attack against the Bedouin community in the Negev Desert and traditional ownership of the area's land.

Fil Kaler's 6min Video: Al-Arakib Razed By Israeli Forces (includes interviews)
Al-Arakib Razed By Israeli Forces:
"filkaler | December 28, 2010
Around 350 Bedouins living in Israel's Negev desert have been made homeless after police raided their village and razed their homes.
Over 1,500 riot police arrived in Al-Arakib village at dawn, they destroyed 40 to 50 homes and uprooted hundreds of olive trees belonging to the villagers.
Israel Land Administration officials refer to the village as 'unrecognized' and claimed the demolition was legal because residents 'invaded' the area.
Residents say they have lived on the land since the Ottoman Empire, and that their village cemetery contains graves dating back to the end of the 19th Century.
Half a million trees planted during the past 18 months on the ancestral lands of the Bedouin in Israel's Negev region were bought by a controversial Christian evangelical television channel know as God-TV, US tax records show.
The Jewish National Fund, an international non-profit organization in charge of forestation and developing Jewish settlements in Israel, received a US$500,000 donation from God-TV to 'make the desert bloom'.
Al-Araqib has been demolished seven times in recent months by the Israeli police as officials increase the pressure on the 350 inhabitants to move to Rahat, a run down, government-planned township nearby.
Netanyahu recently described the Bedouin citizens of Israel as a 'real threat', legitimizing their expulsion from the Negev in order to 'Judaize' it.

Village of El Araqib Demolished for the Eighth Time Today:
Source: The Alternative Information Center (AIC)
Thursday, 23 December 2010 12:33 Recognition Forum
This morning (23 December) at 7.00, approximately 40 police officers, together with authorities from the land administration and their bulldozers, began to gather at the Bakama Junction in preparation for yet another demolition of the Bedouin village of El Araqib in the Negev. At 8.00 a.m. the destruction forces arrived to El Araqib, where they completely demolished the village. The Israeli authorities took vehicles that were in the village. Residents of El Araqib managed to save only some of the resident families’ personal effects; what they didn’t manage to save was buried under the destruction.
Yet again the residents of El Araqib are thrown into their fields with no roof over their heads, no belongings and with no solution offered to them.
Immediately following exit of the Israeli forces from the area, El Araqib residents began rebuilding their village. Activists will join residents of the village this weekend in rehabilitation work.

Jillian Kestler-D'Amours, The Electronic Intifada, 24 September 2010
The Palestinian Bedouin village of al-Araqib was destroyed for the fifth time in two months on 13 September. Villagers and their supporters watched as it took less than an hour for three bulldozers and at least a hundred police officers to raze the entire community, located just outside of Beersheba in the Negev desert. Jillian Kestler-D'Amours interviews Ismael Abu Saad, Associate Professor at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and the founder of the university's Center for Bedouin Studies and Development, about the history of Bedouin communities and Israeli policy in the region, and the strength of resistance in al-Araqib.
Jillian Kestler-D'Amours: Tell us about the Palestinian Bedouin community in the Negev.
Ismael Abu Saad: The Bedouin community is the poorest community among the Palestinian minority in Israel and even it's the poorest community in the whole country. Historically they lived in the desert. They had their own land. They grazed sheep. They engaged in traditional agriculture and they practiced their life peacefully for thousands of years.
They were not interested in real interaction with the central governments throughout history because all they wanted was to practice their way of life without any disruptions and interference from the government. Traditionally, the Bedouin never registered their lands, not because they didn't want to register their lands, but because it wasn't part of their traditional way of life. They dealt with it in their own traditional law system. They buy and sell all other things without documentation. That wasn't part of the culture.
JK: In the late 1960s, the Israeli state began moving Palestinian Bedouin into seven urban townships in the Negev. What impact has this plan had on Bedouin communities in the area?
IA: The seven planned towns are the poorest towns in the country. Unemployment is very high. Those towns are dormitory towns: people only sleep there. There are no jobs. There is no economic infrastructure. There are no facilities. I live in [the Bedouin town of] Lakiyeh; there are close to 10,000 people living there and there's no bank. To cash a check, you have to drive to Beersheba. It's crazy.
We see now that half of the Bedouin community doesn't live in the townships that the state planned for the Bedouin because those towns really didn't solve the problem. Urbanization failed. It was a very destructive way of life. You can't bring people from a traditional way of life into urbanization. The experience, the seven towns that they built, I call them government land towns, they failed.
Why don't we learn from our mistake, from the government's mistake? Why do the Jews have the right to live in agricultural villages, in kibbutzim, in urban towns [and the Bedouin don't]? Why don't you open this option for the Bedouin? Why don't you treat the Bedouin Arabs like the Jewish citizens? The Bedouin are in a catch-22 now. They can't maintain their way of life and the government is offering them only one option and this option doesn't suit their way of life.
JK: Is what's happening in al-Araqib a test of Bedouin resistance?
IA: I think [the Israeli government is] trying to send a message. If they succeed there, they will scare the others. There's another problem because the community in the south, the Bedouin community, is a very weak community. There is no unity and I can understand the lack of unity because people are afraid. People want to survive and find ways not to upset the government, but I don't think that's working well for the community itself. But I don't think the lack of unity will help the government get rid of those unrecognized towns. Why? Because the people have the right to live in their own lands even though it's not registered like Uncle Sam wants it to be.
JK: Could you suggest any solutions?
IA: The main thing is that the State of Israel used power and believed that power is going to solve the problem. I don't think power is going to solve the problem. They have been practicing different methods of power and didn't solve the problem. Why don't you have a dialogue? Why don't you recognize the way of life of the people? You can't ignore it.
I know that they're interested in the land but there is enough land in the Negev for both sides. The Bedouin are not claiming the whole Negev. And also, in the policies that really have been very clear through the last more than sixty years, we see that Jews have the right to live wherever they want in the Negev, even though the land doesn't belong to them. They go and live and the government supports them: gives them water and electricity. While the indigenous people, the owners of the land, don't even have that option.
Also, the suggestion that, why don't you give us another way of living? Why just urbanization? Why don't you offer Bedouin agricultural villages? Why is it given to a segment of people, to the Jewish people, but not for the Bedouin people? We live in a so-called democracy. Both are citizens. So if there is a way of trying to find solutions, I think the solutions are there. Solutions always come when two sides sit and talk and agree on something. It's not one side. And the whole government policy from 1948 until now is always one-sided policy. It's always enforcing the laws that are against the will of the people, against their way of life.
JK: Do you think the residents of al-Araqib and other unrecognized Bedouin communities will ever give up?
IA: I don't think people will ever give up. I am saying it openly and I have said it so many times, about the stupidity of the government. If they improved the quality of life in the [planned] towns, at least it may motivate somebody to leave. But the problem is that the alternative is even worse than being in an unrecognized village. Here it's hell and there it's hell. You can't trade hell by hell.
Today, people will resist and I'm quite sure they're not giving it up, whatever it will cost them. I think people will stay. And I think people have learned how prejudiced the government is against them. I don't think they will give it up because the alternative is even worse. They don't have anything to lose.
You have to give people services and it's time for [the Israeli state] to recognize the traditions of the others. It's time for the state to change its way of trying to solve problems by power. It's time to use their brains rather than their muscles. Having 3,000 policemen [demolish al-Araqib]: it's a show. I think it's stupidity also, you know. That costs a lot of money. By the money they wasted in those forces, they could build schools or other projects. We need social workers. We need counselors. We need educators. We don't need policemen to come and solve the problem. Power doesn't solve any problem.

Ethnic cleansing in Israel: Al Araqib demolished for the 3rd time
On Eve of Ramadan: Police Demolished Bedouin Village for Third Time
Tuesday, 10 August 2010 11:40 Various organisations in Israel
Source: The Aletrnative Information Center (AIC)
This morning police forces demolished the village of el Araqib for the third time in two weeks. The village residents, however, who remain on the eve of Ramadan without water and shelter under the blazing sun, began rebuilding the shelters from wood even before the police left the area. Left-wing activist Gadi Elgazi was detained.
Tens of left-wing activists, Jews and Arabs, slept in the village and are assisting the residents to rebuild; one activist was detained.
The demolitions began at 5.30 a.m. Two bulldozers were accompanied by 100 police officers, mounted police and trucks. The forces removed water containers and the remains of shelters that were constructed since the last demolition, in order to prevent reuse of these materials. Families, including infants and the elderly, were forcibly removed from their shelters. Tens of left-wing activists from Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Beer Sheva were present during the demolitions, having slept in the village to express solidarity with the residents. The residents and volunteers resisted in a non-violent manner. Activists in the village report that the demolitions were accompanied by violence toward the villagers and activists. Professor Gadi Elgazi from the Tarabut movement was beaten and injured in his nose. He was detained whilst speaking with the police, asking them to refrain from demolishing.
Residents with the assistance of volunteers are now busy rebuilding their shelters. A resident of the village expressed his anger and rage that the demolitions occurred on the eve of the month of Ramadan, holy to Muslims. “They have no God,” he said, adding that “we will continue to cling to the land of our forefathers and rebuild the village until our right to live there will be recognized by the world.”
The Israeli Land Administration is determined to destroy the village, and the Jewish National Fund plans to plant trees in the area in order to prevent the residents from returning. This is despite the fact that ownership over the land has not yet been established, and is currently being deliberated in the Beer Sheva Regional Court.
The village of el Araqib has been located in the area between Beer Sheva and Rahat already since the 19th century. Residents of the village, the Aturi family, worked the land at the beginning of the 20th century and as both Turkish and British documents testify, they also paid taxes on their land. The village even has an ancient cemetery of the resident family. The residents were removed by state authorities in 1951, and were promised this was a temporary move for military training and that they could return to their village in six months. However, since then they were never allowed back on their land. In the decades since, the residents returned to work their land, and in the 1990’s returned to live there. Their ownership over the land is currently being discussed in a long and complex court case in the Beer Sheva regional court, and academic researchers have already testified on behalf of the residents’ ownership over the land.

Israel Demolishes 40 Bedouin Homes in Negev:
Israel demolished 40 homes today (27 July) in the "unrecognized" Bedouin village of el Araqib. At 4:30 a.m., 1500 police officers carrying firearms and stun grenades, followed by a special patrol unit, helicopter, mounted horsemen and bulldozers, entered el Araqib and began demolishing everything in the village.
"Over 300 Bedouins, mainly children, were forcefully removed from their village as they watched the Israeli police destroy their homes and property. Yoav, a student activist from Tel Aviv University, joined approximately 30 additional activists in a solidarity visit to resist the demolition. He states, “It was a big shock for all us because no one expected anything so big; it was quite scary.”
Only last week Dr. Awad Abu Freih, spokesman for the el Araqib Popular Committee, wrote that 'of late someone is pushing for a violent resolution of the many years of conflict between the Bedouins in the Negev and the State.' This morning, his prediction come true, Dr. Abu Freih expressed the utter shock of el Araqib's residents. Soon after the police arrived, the villagers and activists in the area began a non-violent protest that provoked a violent response from the police.
The historical Bedouin village located between Rahat and Beer Sheva has been targeted by the Jewish National Fund (JNF), which aims to create a 'Negev Forest' in its place. The JNF has been working to evacuate the Bedouins from their lands by planting forests so that the Bedouins can neither live in the area, nor use the land for agricultural production. Ironically, the JNF claims that they help the Bedouins through their Blueprint Negev Plan: “The work of JNF benefits all Israelis. Blueprint Negev looks to bring real change to the lives of the residents of the Negev, including the 160,000 Bedouin, most of whom suffer from high unemployment and low levels of education.”
The el Araqib residents brought their case to the Beer Sheva District Court and are still awaiting a decision on the ownership of the land. However, the Israeli state proceeded to demolish homes shortly after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly announced that the Bedouins are a “real threat” to Israel. Netanyahu warned yesterday of a situation in which 'various elements will demand nationality and rights within Israel, in the Negev for example, if a region is created without a Jewish majority. This occurred in the Balkans and this is a real threat.' In other words, he is worried that he will not be able to create a Jewish majority in the Negev.
The Bedouins are aware of the aim of the government, and Dr. Abu Freih commented that “I don’t believe the government will listen to us because they want to take our lands. I am not sure that Netanyahu will help me.”
However, the el Araqib residents have not lost hope: they are determined to rebuild their homes.
Since the creation of Israel in 1948, the Bedouins have struggled to keep their homes and property in the Negev. Between 1948 and 1966, the Israeli government deemed 85% of the Negev as state-owned land. This meant that the Bedouin property became 'illegal' and unrecognized by the Israeli government. Consequently, the government forced many Bedouin tribes to move into a small designated area of land called the Siyag Triangle (land between the three cities of Beer Sheva, Arad, and Dimona). Additionally, in 1951, the government pushed many of the Bedouins further into the desert and into Jordan. Currently, about half the Bedouins have moved to failing Negev towns, while the other half remain in 45 'unrecognized' villages. The unrecognized villages do not receive any municipal services, including sanitation services, connection to electricity, and access to the main water lines.

Early morning on 27 July, Israeli bulldozers, flanked by helicopters and throngs of police, demolished the entire Bedouin village of al-Araqib in the northern Negev desert. Despite their land rights cases still pending in the court system, hundreds of al-Araqib villagers were instantly made homeless a month after Israeli police posted demolition orders.
Eyewitness reports say the police were accompanied by several busloads of right-wing Israeli civilians who cheered during the demolitions.
The Electronic Intifada spoke with Dr. Yeela Ranaan of the Regional Council for Unrecognized Villages (RCUV) in the Negev, who was in al-Araqib all day long during the demolitions. (Read More)
