"Palestinians in Gaza took to the streets to celebrate the signing of the landmark national reconciliation pact in Cairo between Fatah and Hamas. Carrying the Palestinian flag as well as those of Hamas and Fatah side by side, people from all walks of life, overwhelmed with joy, turned out to celebrate.

The signing ceremony was attended by representatives from 13 Palestinian factions. Representatives of both Hamas and Fatah reached a deal in Cairo last Wednesday to establish an interim unity government and hold presidential and parliamentary elections within a year.
The two factions had been at loggerheads ever since Hamas won the parliamentary elections in January 2006. The rifts widened in June 2007 after Hamas took control of Gaza.
Now it's a new era, a new chapter has been opened to end years of division after this historic achievement, in which all agreed to put national interests before all factional and personal considerations. This has paved the way for new presidential and legislative elections within a year.
