"Back in the 1980s the University of London Union was at the forefront of the campaign to boycott Apartheid in South Africa.

Now, Europe's largest student union has set its sights on Israel by passing a motion for a campaign of boycott, divestment and sanctions.

“But the Union of Jewish students in the UK has criticised the move, and accused the motion of being unrepresentative. It claims the move is purely down to what it describes as far-left activists with warped views.”

ULU is the umbrella body for all of London's university unions, representing a total of 120 thousand students. And the organisation's executive stands by the motion.

PressTV did ask the Union of Jewish students to elaborate on their position, but our request was declined.

The campaign of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions in support of Palestine extends far beyond the University gates. A number of the UK's trade unions have also passed motions in favour of boycotting corporations with operations in illegal west bank settlements, and protestors have targeted high street stores selling products from the settlements.

Meanwhile the student campaign has also expanded further, with the UK wide national union of students passing a motion upholding the Palestinian right of return, calling for students to partner with Palestinian universities and an end to the Israel's siege of Gaza. The Union of Jewish students and the Jewish board of deputies in the UK have both demanded the NUS immediately revoke the policy.
