"The Palestinian parliamentary elections of January 2006, which brought Hamas to power by an outright majority, also saw thirteen women elected to the Palestinian Legislative Council. Six of those women represented Hamas, and three of them live in Gaza, they attend PLC sessions and take part in various events.

It is said that women make up half of society, Here in Gaza female lawmakers say their role is by no means secondary, and that just like men, they've long played an active part in debating and passing legislation.

Mariam Farahat known as the 'Mother of Martyrs' after losing three sons to the conflict with Israel, says, women's participation in Palestinian political and economic life is not new. Palestinian women have borne the brunt of hardships under the Israeli siege. And nearly every Palestinian family has been left without a son, brother or father, either imprisoned in Israeli jails or killed by the Israeli military
According to the reform and change bloc of Hamas in the PLC , it was necessary to let women have their say in the political arena.

The culture in Gaza may seem conservative at first glance, but there are no stereotypes regarding gender, and women are present almost everywhere, taking part in many different social and political events.
