Defying international calls, Israel demolishes Jerusalem hotel to build new settlement

PressTV - Israelis raze al-Quds hotel illegally:

"Israeli bulldozers have destroyed a hotel compound in East al-Quds (Jerusalem) to build 20 new settler units on the occupied Palestinian land, defying international calls for putting an end to Tel Aviv's demolitions.

The hotel was razed early Sunday and is to be replaced by 20 apartments for Israelis. The Jerusalem municipality approved the decision to raze the structure near the al-Aqsa Mosque despite the international condemnation of the move.

The Israeli latest move in its nonstop wave of demolitions in the illegally annexed city comes as Palestinian Authority leaders say they will not return to direct talks unless Israel stops all settlement construction.

They have also planned to submit to the United Nations Security Council a resolution condemning what they have called gradual land grabs.

Tel Aviv is planning to build the new settlement units in the Arab neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah.

Bulldozers have been working overtime since direct talks between the Palestinians and the Israelis broke down after Tel Aviv decided not to extend the partial settlement freeze in the West Bank and East al-Quds.

In 2010 alone, Israel destroyed nearly 40 Palestinian homes and 90 shops in East al-Quds, with the dramatic increase of razing homes giving rise to concerns about Israel's plan to remove the Palestinians from the occupied city and judaize the Palestinians' demanded capital.

A recent report by the United Nations warned that almost a quarter of the 250,000 Palestinians living in East al-Quds are at the risk of having their homes leveled by Israel.
