Israel has escalated its military attacks against Gaza, leading many here to wonder if this could be a prelude to another war.

Palestinian resistance factions say that the latest threats and incitements by some senior Israeli army officials can be interpreted as an attempt by Israel to get support for an eventual attack on the coastal enclave.

A senior Israeli army officer has recently told the BBC that with Hamas in control of the Strip, another war was only a question of time.

Since the end of the 2009 war on Gaza, a large number of Palestinians have been killed or wounded as a result of Israeli tank shelling and air attacks on Gaza.

The latest UN figures show that so far this year 62 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli action in Gaza , while during the same period only one person in Israel has been killed by missiles fired from Gaza.

Earlier on Saturday, at least five people were killed by an Israeli aerial assault on the town of Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip. Israeli officials said that these raids were aimed at putting an end to the firing of homed made projectiles into southern Israel and weakening the capabilities of resistance factions.

This tension comes only days before the 2nd anniversary of Israel's 22-day war on Gaza which left over 1400 Palestinians, most of them civilians, dead.

People here say the prolonged siege and the frequent Israeli air and ground raids have been made possible only because the international community has failed to exert enough pressure on Israel to end its culture of impunity.
