Occupation Municipality Tightening the Noose - License Problems for Palestinian Merchants in Damasco´s Gate

License Problems Merchants in Damasco´s Gate

aicvideo June 20, 2010The Damascus Gate entering the north of Jerusalem's Old City is a traditional center of commerce where people from different parts of the city and, before the Israeli occupation, from the West Bank, come to buy products of various kinds.

This custom even for Jerusalemites now appears to be threatened by a new Jerusalem Municipality policy regarding street traders in the area. The Jerusalem municipality decided to review and then renew the licenses of traders, ostensibly to standardize their employment situation. However, in reality this is leading to the revocation of licenses and harassment of traders with threats of fines.
