Holocaust Survivor Protests Israeli Massacre in Gaza - 2009

Holocaust Survivor Protests Israeli Massacre in Gaza - 2009:

"Elderly Holocaust Survivor protests Israel's response to Hamas rocket attacks. She says it's not fair since Israel is so much stronger.

What would the international community do if Hamas launched massive airstrikes against Israel, marched deep into Tel Aviv or, shelled a UN-run school building, used as a refugee camp, leaving many Israeli children dead and many more injured? What if the Israeli people had been punished by seizure and blockade simply because they had chosen a far right party or a hard-line politician in a fair and free election? What would the so-called free nations be saying had Hamas leaders, in an effort to appeal to voters, decided to continue their large offensive against Israeli civilians despite the international calls for a cease-fire? What if the media all over the world had depicted a handful of Israeli children crying over the bodies of their dead mothers?

There is much irony in this analogy, but the truth is that Israel has long been excused for every terrible atrocity it has perpetrated and continues to perpetrate. Such double standards and twisted positions that the key powers in the world are embracing nowadays are fueling the already anti-West sentiments not only in Arab and Muslim countries but also across the entire world.

Israel, according to the Western hypocritical standards, is always above the law. Throughout the past 60 years, Israel has constantly been violating the international law and the rules and principles of nations which govern the relations of nations with each other. Take the Geneva Convention for protecting civilians in times of war as an example.
Israel has committed serious war crimes by deliberately targeting civilians throughout its wars with the Arabs. So the evidence which cites Israel as being in violation of international law or human rights is enormous.
Ignoring a UN-adopted resolution and international calls for an immediate end to its recent aggression on Gaza, the Israelis are continuing their bloody operation which, until now, has claimed the lives of more than 800 innocent Palestinians (nearly all of them civilians) and injured more than 3000. Stories of deliberate killings of civilians, targeting schools and indiscriminately shelling Palestinian towns in the Gaza Strip are compelling evidence of Israels disdain and contempt for the well-crafted principles of international law. The chief objective of the current operation, as is clear from Israeli behavior so far, is to eradicate the people of Gaza entirely.

A UN-filed report has found that since the Israeli aggression on Gaza late last month, as many as 42 percent of the overall Palestinian dead are women and children. In one heartbreaking incident, the Israeli war machine shelled a UN-run school in which hundreds of Palestinians were seeking shelter.
As many as 33 innocent people, most of them women and children, were immediately killed in a cowardly and barbaric act that indicates that the Israeli army is deliberately targeting every living creature in Gaza.
The UN report has concluded that there is no safe space in the Gaza Strip no safe haven, no bomb shelters and the borders are closed and civilians have no place to flee. In a similar incident, Israeli forces evacuated many Palestinian civilians to a house in the Zaitoun district. Shortly after, the house was shelled and more than 100 civilians were instantly killed.

On the diplomatic front, Israel has expressed its disdain for a UN-adopted resolution that calls for an immediate ceasefire. Hours after the United Nations passed the resolution that calls for an end to the fighting, a full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and creating passages for humanitarian aid to people there, a spokesman for the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was quoted as saying that the UN decision is not practical and is unworkable.
Despite the loss of lives in this aggression, there have been numerous rational voices heard from here and there that have condemned the Israeli barbarism in Gaza during the past 16 days.
A top Vatican official likened what the Israelis are doing in Gaza with what the Nazis did during the Second World War. Gaza, said Cardinal Renato Martino, resembles a big concentration camp. Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan president, has called the Israeli army a coward army. His government has expelled the Israeli ambassador from Caracas in protest against what the Israeli government is doing in Gaza nowadays.
Across the Arab and Muslim world, the show of solidarity with the Palestinians has never reached such a height as it has during this crisis. Just after the Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip, thousands of protesters took to the streets, apparently shocked by the heartbreaking footage of Palestinian victims, to protest the brutality of the aggressor and the lack of response of the international community, which would have been totally different had the perpetrator not been Israel. Israeli fire kills Palestinian farmer in Gaza after a bomb explosion

Israeli fire kills Palestinian farmer in Gaza after a bomb explosion:

"A blast has claimed the life of an Israeli soldier and has left three others injured near the Gaza Strip border, new reports say.

According to Dubai-based Al Arabiya television, the explosion occurred earlier on Tuesday.

Palestinians living near the Kissufim crossing told Reuters that they had seen two or three gunmen moving toward the border fence early in the morning mist.

The residents said they later heard explosions and gunfire shortly after 8 am (0600 GMT).

It is not yet clear who caused the explosion.

The Israeli military says the blast was the result of a bomb explosion close to forces stationed on its own side of the Gaza border fence.

Israel has not revealed the identity of its soldier, as it withholds news of deaths until their families are notified.

The reported blast follows Operation Cast Lead, which was unleashed against the Gaza Strip on Dec. 27.

At least 1,330 Palestinians died during the offensive, while some 5,450 others were reported wounded.

The high civilian death toll in the war has put Tel Aviv under the threat of war crime charges due to its use of white phosphorous, classified as a 'chemical' by US intelligence, and because of its shelling of UN schools and installations that were serving as shelters."

Zionist Rabbi told troops to show Gaza no mercy

Zionist Rabbi told troops to show Gaza no mercy:

"An Israeli human rights group on Monday called for the immediate dismissal of the chief military rabbi, claiming he gave soldiers fighting in Gaza pamphlets urging them to show no mercy.

Yesh Din said it had written to both Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi, urging them to 'take this incitement seriously and fire Chief Military Rabbi' Brigadier General Avi Ronzki.

It said a pamphlet distributed to soldiers taking part in Operation Cast Lead stressed that the troops should show no mercy to their enemies, and that the pamphlet borders 'on incitement and racism against the Palestinian people.'

'When you show mercy to a cruel enemy you are being cruel to pure and honest soldiers. These are not games at the amusement park where sportsmanship teaches one to make concessions. This is a war on murderers,' Yesh Din quoted the pamphlet as saying.

It said the pamphlet quotes at length statements by Rabbi Shlomo Aviner, a spiritual leader of the Jewish settlers in the occupied West Bank who opposes any compromise with Palestinians.

'The Palestinians claim they deserve a state here, when in reality there was never a Palestinian or Arab state within the borders of our country,' the pamphlet quoted Aviner as saying.

"[There is] a biblical ban on surrendering a single millimeter of it [the Land of Israel] to gentiles, though all sorts of impure distortions and foolishness of autonomy, enclaves and other national weaknesses. We will not abandon it to the hands of another nation, not a finger, not a nail of it." another excerpt said.

The rights group said the pamphlet contains "degrading and belittling messages that border on incitement and racism against the Palestinian people. These messages can be interpreted as a call to act outside of the confines of international laws of war."

The Haaretz newspaper reported on Monday that far right-wing groups also gave out pamphlets bearing racist messages on military bases.

It said one urged soldiers to "spare your lives and the lives of your friends and not to show concern for a population that surrounds us and harms us..."

"Kill the one who comes to kill you. As for the population, it is not innocent," the daily quoted the pamphlet as saying.

UNICEF: Rehabilitating learning centers in Gaza:

"JERUSALEM, 23 January 2009 The recent and extreme levels of conflict in Gaza have affected the lives of 840,000 children and young people. Many have lost their schools, health facilities, play areas and even neighbourhoods, which have been destroyed in the violence.

Women and children are the worst affected. Among them are a special group with one foot still in childhood and another in adulthood: the adolescents.

We lived the worst life humans could live in this world no food or electricity, no water, says Lara Abu Ramadan, a 17-year-old Gaza resident, describing her experience of the conflict.

As a result of the escalation of violence in the recent conflict, many adolescents in Gaza are now experiencing high levels of stress, anxiety, insecurity and intense fear, notes the head of UNICEFs Adolescent Development and Participation (ADAP) programme, Linda Sall. However, as adolescents, they also feel the need to take some action to support their families, friends and community.

Baroness Tonge: "Israel stands accused of war crimes witnessed by the whole world"

Baroness Tonge: "Israel stands accused of war crimes witnessed by the whole world":

"Baroness Tonge: My Lords, Tzipi Livni, the Israeli Foreign Minister, said that Israel would go wild in Gaza. They certainly did that, with the USA turning its usual blind eye. The UK and the European Union have behaved so feebly they were almost colluding in Israel's actions. Israel carefully excluded the press and media—evidence of guilt? But the UN, Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International all had people watching what was happening, as well as the Al-Jazeera cameras.

One charge I wish to make concerns the use of white phosphorus in residential areas, where many people were injured by this obscene material. It is a crime. The injuries sustained by burning phosphorus are horrible and the suffering is unthinkable. The Israelis also used 155mm shells in residential areas, able to do damage over a range of 300 metres. Yet, the Israelis assured us that they were accurately targeting only those areas with Hamas installations. Really? With a damage range of 300 metres? What lies. Both actions are against international law; they are war crimes. Many innocent civilians, many little children, have been killed by these obscenities.

Will the Minister assure us, therefore, that our Government and the European Union will not be content with Israeli offers of an inquiry into the behaviour of their military? There must be an independent investigation through the United Nations Security Council. Israel stands accused of war crimes, witnessed by the whole world. What hope for Israels long-term future now?"

But, the broadcaster says it does not want to compromise public confidence in its impartiality. Al Jazeera's Fergal Parkinson reports."

Noam Chomsky: Obama's Stance on Gaza Crisis "Approximately the Bush Position"

Chomsky: Obama on Gaza is similar to Bush-1/3:

"Noam Chomsky: Obama's Stance on Gaza Crisis 'Approximately the Bush Position'

In a visit to the State Department Thursday, President Obama made his first substantive comments on the Middle East conflict since Israel's attack on Gaza. Obama first mentioned his commitment to Israel's security, without affirming his commitment to Palestinian security. He condemned Palestinian rocket attacks on southern Israeli towns, but didn't criticize the US-backed Israeli bombings of densely populated Gaza. But in a departure from the Bush administration, Obama acknowledged Palestinian suffering and said Gaza's borders should be opened to aid. We speak with MIT professor, Noam Chomsky."

UNICEF: The story of Amira, a child of Gaza:

"NEW YORK, USA, 21 January 2009 Amira, 15, is a survivor. After her two siblings and father were killed during the conflict in the Gaza Strip, she crawled from her familys home and was found three days later in a neighbours house.

She was alone for three days in the street and no one passed in that neighbourhood, Amiras mother recalls.

Amira herself remembers: My father went outside, telling us, I want sit outside with my friends and read the Quran so that you can sleep well and not be scared. Shortly thereafter, she says, her father and the others died in a missile strike.

The three-week conflict, which halted with a ceasefire this past weekend, has left a trail of destruction including thousands of homes destroyed and damaged. Before the ceasefire was declared, some 50,000 people sought refuge in UN shelters. Only now are many Gazans making their way home again.
