Manchester University Student Occupation for Gaza

Manchester University Student Occupation for Gaza Part1:

"Manchester University, England. 4th March 2009. Students have been in occupation of the Simon building at the university for Gaza for 29 days. The building is directly opposite the university administration building where vice-chancellor Alan Gilbert has his office.

They hold a rally next to the students union--Steve Biko building. Academics at the university support their stance and one of the lecturers addresses the rally. The rally is followed by a noisy, but peaceful, demonstration around the campus and another rally is held in the Quadrangle directly in front of the John Owen building where Gilbert's office is situated. The students then march back to the Simon building for a discussion of future tactics. Students from some of the 30 other university Gaza occupations address the meeting and express solidarity.

Later in the afternoon, the students set up 'checkpoints' at the entrances to the Quadrangle to illustrate what the people of Palestine have to endure every day of their lives. Gilbert and other university managers are briefly 'detained' at the 'checkpoints' so that the students can plead their case with them before allowing them to proceed. The university management responds by calling the police. But by this time the students have made their point and put some much needed pressure on this extraordinarily obstinate university management--other universities have been much more amenable. The students withdraw and no one is arrested."
