"Israeli naval commandos sized a French-flagged boat about 50 nautical miles off the sea shore of gaza, forcing it to the Israeli port of Ashdod.

The French yacht dubbed as Dignite Al Karama, was carrying 17 passengers who intended to reach the Gaza Strip to break the naval blockade. The boat was originally part of a 10-ship flotilla which had been due to sail for Gaza at the end of June


Palestinians and pro-Palestinian activists condemned the interception of the French boat by the Israeli navy describing it as a piracy

Upon hearing the news, a presser was held at the Gaza sea port by the international-Palestinian campaign against the siege.

Human rights activists said that the seizer of the boat demonstrates that Israel's blockade of Gaza is not based on 'security', but is meant to punish the Palestinian people, denying their freedom and keeping them cut off from the rest of the world.

For its part the Palestinian government in Gaza along with a number of Palestinian factions condemned the Israeli act, and demanded the UN and international human rights organizations to ensure the safety of the activists and allow them to reach Gaza

The besieged costal territory has been under siege since 2007 that has strangled the economy, and denying Gaza's 1.6 million people their basic rights, including the freedom of movement, and the rights to appropriate living conditions. Poverty and unemployment rates stand at approximately 80 percent and 60 percent, respectively, in the sea side strip.
