"At least 1,000 Palestinians marched in Gaza City on Wednesday, demanding the implementation of the reconciliation agreement signed between Fatah and Hamas factions two weeks ago in Cairo.

The two parties had been at odds since Hamas beat Fatah in 2006 parliamentary elections. The rivalry between the two groups worsened a year later, when Hamas forced Fatah out of Gaza and took control of the territory.

Demonstrators urged greater solidarity among all Palestinians.

Over and above the domestic urge for unity, the Arab Spring and the Egyptian revolution in particular have been the major forces behind the Palestinian reconciliation.

The landmark unity deal is expected to restore the momentum of the Palestinian cause. The onus now is on the authorities to fully implement the agreement.

Because past attempts by Fatah and Hamas to reconcile have failed, many here are urging the quick implementation of the reconciliation deal, which was signed in Cairo in early May.
