Israeli bulldozers razed a home in the East Jerusalem, al-Quds neighborhood of Sheik Jarrah early this morning. Nasser Siyam says his home was crushed to the ground, leaving all eight members of his family homeless.

Siyam's mother-in-law spoke on behalf of her distraught daughter, saying this is the worse day of their lives.

Siyam says he has been battling the Israeli court system since 2004, trying to save his home. He has applied for permits several times to keep his home, but was denied every time.

As Nasser Siyam and his family have nowhere else to go, they will stay in the bedroom and the bathroom that were spared from the demolition.

Nasser Siyam's house is the first home of the new year to be demolished by Israeli bulldozers. Analysts expect many more homes to be demolished in the year 2011.

In 2010 alone, Israel has destroyed nearly 40 Palestinian homes and 90 shops in East Jerusalem al-Quds. Sources say Israel's dramatic increase of razing homes is part of a plan to remove the Palestinians and judaize East Jerusalem.

It is extremely rare for a Palestinian living in East Jerusalem to receive a permit. Recently, the United Nations reported that almost a quarter of the 250,000 Palestinians living in East Jerusalem are at risk of having their homes demolished by Israel.
