In 2006, the Israeli government developed the civic service, or national service, program for citizens who are otherwise exempt from the army, namely Palestinian citizens of Israel. The Palestinian community has for the mostpart resisted the volunteer program, however, based on numerous factors. These include the fact that their community was never consulted during the formation of the program, its direct links to the Israeli military establishment and how it serves to further condition the basic rights of Palestinian citizens of Israel. The AIC spoke with Nadim Nashif, the Coordinator of Baladna - Association for Arab Youth, about the issues raised by the Israeli civic service program.
