HEBRON: Israeli settlers beat up Palestinian reporter during olive harvest, punch CPTer

On the morning of Saturday 18 October 2008, a group of four Israeli settlers beat up a Palestinian reporter, Abed Hashlamoun, in the Tel Rumeida area of Hebron. He required hospital treatment for his injuries.

Hashlamoun had been photographing Palestinians, Israelis, and internationals harvesting olives together in an event organized by Tel Rumeida landowners. Hashlamoun was walking alone through the olive groves when male settlers knocked him to the ground and began beating and kicking him.

Several of the olive pickers heard his cries and ran to help him. One of the settlers seized Hashlamoun’s camera. CPTer Janet Benvie approached the settler and asked him to return the camera, but he did not respond. When Benvie took hold of the camera strap the young man punched her in the face, knocking her to the ground. He then hurled the camera into the rocky field below.

The settlers were still nearby when Israeli soldiers arrived. “I repeatedly asked the soldiers to detain the men who attacked us, but instead they permitted the attackers to leave the scene,” said Benvie.

The Israeli military declared the area a closed military zone, ordered an end to the olive picking, and required the Israeli and international olive pickers to leave the area.

Photographs are available at http://cpt.org/gallery/album261

Hashlamoun was taken to hospital for treatment, but released shortly after. Benvie sustained a cut and bruising to her face, but did not require medical treatment.

Mass olive-harvest in the village of Ni'lin - 10-10-08

Mass olive-harvest in village Ni'I'lin - 10-10-08:

"In solidarity with the popular struggle against robbery of the lands and the apartheid wall which build on the village lands, a group of about 100 Israelis arrived at the village.

The olive-harvest took place together with inhabitants of the village. His target, to help the people of the village to pick olives of their plantations and to express solidarity with the residents that injured from the separation fence that build on their lands, prevents from them to cultivate the land, to collect the crop, and slowly creates the conditions that will enable to the state and to the settlers to control on the lands and to do in them as their desire.

The army had another plan. In spite of that the villagers' right is to work on their land, the army made an effort to prevent the action by the declaration of the area as militaristic closed territory and an activation of violence against the group.

Nevertheless lastly the group succeeded to arrive at the territory that will set and to pick olives.

But In the other part of the territory the border guard attacked in tear gas Palestinian families, that picked olives on their plantations, and hurt children and women."

Harvest in the Buffer Zone

Harvest in the Buffer Zone:

"Many farmers in the Gaza Strip are being denied access to their land by Israeli occupation forces. An arbitrary 'buffer zone' is being imposed hundreds of metres deep along the Green Line. Agricultural land has been destroyed in these areas and massive numbers of olive and fruit trees have been bulldozed, devastating the livelihoods of entire farming communities. According to the PCHR, approximately 31.503 dunums/31.5 million square metres of land in the Gaza Strip, most of it agricultural, has been razed by the Israelis. This represents at least 10% of the total arable land base of the Gaza Strip. This statistic was published in 2005 but much more destruction has been carried out since. The Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights quoted 31,845,815 square metres of agricultural land levelled by the end of 2007. This does not include lands confiscated more than once; the area confiscated being nearly 10 million square metres.

Gazan farmers have also been impacted by the illegal Israeli siege of the Gaza Strip. Fuel shortages have hampered their ability to power their irrigation systems and closures have made crop exports impossible. As food supplies are severely restricted, it is more urgent than ever for Gaza to be as self-sufficient as possible in food production. The Israeli attacks on farmers and their property are yet a further escalation of the collective punishment suffered"

Israeli settlers disrupt Palestinian harvest

Israeli settlers disrupt Palestinian harvest:

"It's time for the olive harvest in the Palestinian West Bank. However even picking olives from trees on their own land has become an ordeal for many Palestinians, who face opposition from Israeli settlers who've decided to build homes nearby, in violation of international law. Now a group of Jewish Rabbis have taken it upon themselves to provide physical protection to the Palestinians, who they believe are suffering an injustice. But despite their efforts, Israeli settlers have still managed to make their presence felt in an increasingly aggressive manner. Hassan Ghani reports."
